Civil Engineering

Civil engineers are the brainpower behind some of the most fascinating, vital, and complex structures, networks, and systems that modern society depends upon every day.

From the bridges we cross and the buildings we live and work in, to the transportation networks that move people and goods, and the energy and water systems that sustain our communities — civil engineers make it all possible through innovation, precision and a deep understanding of the built environment.

Civil Engineering at Stevens

At Stevens, you’ll learn from expert faculty and a rigorous, forward-thinking curriculum that equips you with the core technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and hands-on experience essential for launching a successful career in engineering.

Our programs emphasize both foundational theory and applied learning, ensuring you graduate ready to develop and implement innovative concepts and designs across a range of critical infrastructure systems — including buildings, bridges, water and energy systems, and transportation networks.

You'll also gain the tools to ensure these systems are not only functional and efficient, but also safe, secure, and environmentally responsible.

Careers in Civil Engineering & Construction

A civil engineering career incorporates many different aspects of engineering including design, construction, management and leadership, and offers excellent opportunities for advancement. These skillsets are desirable to employers and applicable to careers extending far beyond the construction and civil engineering industry. For example, structural engineers are often hired by companies in the aerospace industry to design, develop, and test aircraft, spacecraft, or missile structures.

Some common civil engineering career tracks include:

  • Structural Engineering

  • Construction Engineering and Management

  • Environmental Engineering

  • Transportation Engineering

  • Geotechnical Engineering

  • Hydraulics Engineering

Our civil engineering graduates have been hired at: Aecom, Hardesty-Hanover, Arup, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Langan, ExxonMobil, Thornton Tomasetti

Our construction graduates have been hired at: CL Construction, Hold Construction, Skanska, Gilbane, STV, ExxonMobile

Stevens' construction management master's program helped me earn amazing internship and job opportunities. It gave me knowledge I didn't have before—how to clearly communicate the process of construction with project stakeholders in terms of needs, wants, risk management and problem solving.
