Marouane Temimi Named Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development at the Schaefer School
Professor Marouane Temimi of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering, has been appointed Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development for the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science at Stevens, effective Sept. 1.
“Dr. Temimi is an accomplished scholar and dynamic research leader whose work has already made a significant impact nationally and internationally,” said Jean Zu, Lore E. Feiler Dean of the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science. “His success in building interdisciplinary collaborations, developing major external partnerships, and securing competitive research funding demonstrates the vision and leadership he will bring to this role. I am confident that he will further strengthen our research enterprise, support the success of our faculty, and expand the visibility and impact of SES.”
In his new role, Temimi will support the school's research mission while helping faculty pursue new research opportunities, collaborations and professional development.

A career built on forecasting the unforecastable
Temimi holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in civil engineering, with a focus on remote sensing and water resources, from the University of Quebec, and a B.E. in civil engineering from the National Engineering School of Tunis. Before joining Stevens' Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering as an associate professor in 2020, he was affiliated with The City College of the City University of New York and the NOAA-CREST Institute. He also brings significant international experience from the Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi, where he worked in collaboration with MIT. His earlier private-sector experience further strengthened his expertise in project execution, resource management, and translating applied research into operational practice.
His research, spanning water resources, remote sensing, geographic information systems, hydrometeorology, land-atmosphere interaction, numerical modeling of atmospheric processes and natural hazards, has since grown into a body of federally funded work aimed at giving forecasters and emergency managers more warning before floodwaters rise.
Temimi has served as principal or co-investigator on more than a dozen NASA, NOAA and internationally funded projects over the course of his career. Temimi leads a NOAA-funded project, conducted through the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH), that combines radar and optical satellite imagery with machine learning to track river ice and improve winter flood forecasting — building on an earlier NOAA grant that supported his work modeling and mapping ice-induced flood inundation for integration into the National Water Model.
His lab was also awarded a grant from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), in partnership with NOAA, to develop a computer-vision system that draws on USGS's existing network of river cameras to monitor streamflow conditions nationwide.
Most recently, Temimi’s lab installed an X-band weather radar system on the Hoboken campus through the Davidson Laboratory, giving Stevens the ability to generate high-resolution, hyperlocal precipitation data for flash-flood forecasting across the New York metropolitan area.
Temimi's research has appeared in journals including Environmental Modelling and Software, Journal of Hydrology, and Climate Dynamics.
Recognition for research and innovation
Temimi is the receipient of Stevens 2026 Award for Research Excellence. Temimi's work has earned recognition well beyond Stevens. Earlier this year, he was named a 2026 INNOVATE100 honoree in the Academia category, an initiative from Innovation+ that recognizes leaders driving New Jersey's innovation economy, alongside fellow Stevens faculty Edmund Synakowski and Jennifer Kang-Mieler. He holds the Gallaher Chair Associate Professorship in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering and has received the NOAA/GOES-R Visiting Scientist Program Award, a visiting scientist award from the CNR-Italian Research Council in Potenza, Italy, and two Chancellor's Outstanding Scholarly Awards from the City University of New York.
That research profile has been matched by a steady record of service to Stevens itself. Temimi has sat on the university's Research Enterprise and Technology Commercialization Committee, HPC committee, its faculty recruitment committee, the CE undergraduate curriculum committee and the university's strategic planning committee — the kind of institutional groundwork that now carries into his broader role leading research and faculty development for the Schaefer School.
