Can I Use Work Experience Towards Earning Graduate Credits?

If you're considering a graduate business degree at Stevens Institute of Technology's School of Business, you may be wondering whether your professional experience can count directly toward the credits required for your degree. It's a reasonable question, especially if you've spent years building expertise in your field and want to avoid retreading ground you feel you've already covered. The short answer is no – you can't convert work experience directly into academic credit toward your graduate degree.

However, that doesn't mean your background goes unrecognized. Depending on your prior coursework and professional experience, you may be eligible to waive the foundation courses and/or replace a prerequisite course with a more advanced course. This allows you take a deeper dive into your area of interest and develop new skills to strengthen your degree’s credentials.

Graduate credit represents mastery of specific, degree-level coursework evaluated and approved as part of an accredited program. Professional experience, although valuable, doesn't directly map onto that system. Admissions boards and program directors can't simply translate years on the job into equivalent classroom learning, since the content, rigor and assessment methods differ too much to substitute accurately. What they can do is review your undergraduate transcript and career background together to determine whether you've already demonstrated proficiency in certain foundational subjects.

The procedure usually includes reviewing your transcripts, resume and, in some cases, a conversation with a program director. It's helpful to reach out early in your application process to confirm eligibility, since this can shape your overall learning experience.

Ultimately, the value of your work experience at Stevens isn't just measured in credits. It shows up in the classroom, in group projects, in case study discussions and in the perspective you bring to your coursework. Your work experience meaningfully shapes every step of your academic journey.
