What Can I Expect as an Engineering Student?

Engineering has a reputation for being much harder than many other majors. But it’s important to recognize that although the workload is difficult, most colleges and universities have a wealth of supports that can help engineering students successfully manage the challenge.

A structured course load: Front-loaded, then specialized

Most engineering programs follow a similar arc: heavy math, physics and foundational engineering courses in the first two years, then major-specific coursework and electives later. Calculus, physics, chemistry and an introduction to engineering design tend to dominate first- and second-year schedules, regardless of which engineering discipline a student eventually chooses.

At Stevens, students who struggle early with their course load have a lifeline in the Freshman Option. It allows any student — engineering included — to take one fewer technical course in each of their first two semesters, with the caveat that they must make them up through tuition-free courses the following summer. This gives students a concrete way to ease into their engineering major without just muscling through.

From there, the curriculum builds around the “Design Spine.” Students take one design-focused course each semester through their senior year. First-year courses cover engineering design, systems thinking and sensor integration. Second-year offerings include statics and dynamical systems. The third year introduces materials, engineering economics and discipline-specific design. The sequence ends in the two-semester Senior Capstone, made up of Senior Design and Senior Innovation. In these courses, students work in small teams on real-world technical projects and present their results at Stevens’ annual Innovation Expo.

Support for the long haul

Every Stevens undergraduate gets a faculty advisor starting their first year. The Academic Support Center also offers free one-on-one and small-group tutoring, much of it run by upperclassmen and graduate students who’ve taken the same courses. A drop-in tutoring center in the library serves students who want help without an appointment. The Academic Support Center also runs quiz reviews for select first-year courses and workshops on time management, study skills and overcoming procrastination.

Students who find themselves struggling with the pace of their major can apply for the Reduced Load Option. This stretches the standard eight-semester engineering curriculum to 10 semesters, with tuition waived for the final two terms.

These resources are free and open to all students, whether they’re struggling or not. The goal is to help students form good habits early rather than fix problems after they’ve piled up.

Is there a “typical week” for an engineering student?

This is a hard one to answer, because the experience varies significantly by year and engineering specialty. In general, problem sets, labs and design reviews cluster around midterms and finals.

Engineering courses also tend to build on each other. Missing a concept in week three of a physics or circuits course tends to resurface later — which is why attending tutoring or a faculty member’s office hours early matters more in engineering than in courses where individual units stand on their own.

Stevens’ design curriculum is deliberate about pacing this out. The one-course-per-semester cadence of the “Design Spine” keeps design and hands-on work happening continuously, rather than backloading it into the senior year. By the time the Senior Capstone arrives, most students already have extensive experience completing independent projects.

The bottom line

Engineering degrees are genuinely demanding, and prospective students shouldn’t expect otherwise. But at universities like Stevens, students don’t have to go it alone. Most engineering programs offer a variety of supports to ensure students have the resources they need to successfully earn their degree.
