Stevens Department of Mathematical Sciences Hosts 2022 GAGTA Conference

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stevens Institute of Technology hosts the 2022 GAGTA Conference on campus today and tomorrow, June 29-30. The annual conference on Geometric and Asymptotic Group Theory with Applications (GAGTA), a satellite conference of the prestigious  International Congress of Mathematicians, is organized and attended by researchers in group theory from all over the world. Topics of this 5-day major event are devoted to the modern aspects of group theory that largely evolve on the intersection of geometric and combinatorial group theory, the theory of dynamical systems, ergodic theory, probability, functional analysis, model theory, and low-dimensional topology.

While this year’s GAGTA conference series was originally planned to be held in Russia, Stevens was chosen as an alternate location following the unfolding political crisis between Russia and Ukraine. Stevens is a past GAGTA host (2016) and its reputation for research in group theory and related fields made it a natural choice.

“Speakers at GAGTA, which include current and former Stevens math faculty and postdocs, are among the world's leading experts in group theory and related areas, such as algebraic cryptography,” commented Jan Cannizzo, Teaching Assistant Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

Other Stevens faculty involved in this year’s conference include mathematical sciences teaching associate professor and organizer Denis Serbin, and mathematical sciences professor and speaker Alexei Miasnikov.

The 2022 hybrid program includes informal discussions (in-person and streamed online), networking and collaboration, along with fully virtual sessions July 1-3, in which attendees will attend via Zoom.
