URGENT Stevens Msg: As a follow up to the previous announcement regarding the February 13 cancellation of Stevens classes and the closure of offices, please note the following: 

  • Online courses, including Stevens Online, Noodle and a small number of undergraduate classes, all originally scheduled for virtual delivery, will continue as planned tomorrow.  

  • In-person classes are canceled; these classes should not be moved to remote learning. 

Please refer to today’s earlier message for operational status updates and other information.

Stevens Alert: SNOW DAY Tuesday, February 13

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch predicting significant snow accumulation for Hoboken and the surrounding area. All Stevens classes on February 13 will be canceled, and offices will be closed. Please note, however, that essential employees are required to report to work, and certain essential meetings will be held on a remote basis. Employees uncertain about whether this applies to their individual circumstances should reach out to their managers for clarification. 

Note the following operational status updates for tomorrow: 

  • Pierce Dining Hall and Pierce Cafe will be open 8 a.m. to midnight. 

  • The UCC Marketplace will be open 11 a.m. to midnight. 

  • Retail dining outlets (America’s Cup, Cannon Cafe, Gateway Cafe, and Pi Kitchen) will be closed. 

  • The UCC fitness center, Schaefer Athletic Center and Walker Gym will be closed for recreation and open only for team practices. 

  • The University Center will be open as usual, from 7 am to midnight. 

  • The Samuel C. Williams Library will be closed. 

  • All buildings will be locked and accessible through card access only.  

  • The Stevens Shuttle may be running on a limited basis; please consult the app for updates. 

  • Be sure to adhere to the parking announcement sent by Campus Police earlier today.

Remote Classes and Operations for Friday, January 19

The Emergency Management Team is monitoring forecasts calling for snowfall beginning in the early morning hours of Friday, January 19 and lasting throughout the day. According to National Weather Service predictions, commuting times are likely to be hazardous in the surrounding areas. With consideration for our community’s safety, all Stevens classes on Friday, January 19 will be held remotely, and offices will operate on a remote basis.  

  • Pierce Dining Hall, Pierce Cafe and the UCC Marketplace will operate as usual. Retail dining outlets (America’s Cup, Cannon Cafe, Gateway Cafe, and Pi Kitchen) will not be open. 

  •  The UCC fitness center will be open from 12-8 pm tomorrow for recreational use. The Schaefer Center and Walker Gym will be closed for recreation and only open for team practices. 

  • The Samuel C. Williams Library will maintain regular operating hours.

Stevens Offices Closing and Transitioning to Remote Work at 3:30 p.m.; Delayed Opening Tomorrow

Governor Murphy has declared a state of emergency beginning at 5 p.m. today due to predicted flooding across the state. With consideration for our community’s safety, all Stevens offices will close at 3:30 p.m. on January 9, at which time the university will transition to remote operations. Buildings will be locked and will be accessible through card access only. Offices will reopen at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10; however, as noted in yesterday’s communication, staff may discuss their individual circumstances with their supervisors.

Delayed Opening and Exam Schedule Change on Monday, December 18

Heavy rains are impacting Hoboken and the surrounding area and will continue overnight, with flooding expected to impact rush-hour travel tomorrow morning. With consideration for our community's safety, Stevens will operate on a delayed opening schedule on Monday, December 18. Please note the following changes to Monday’s exams and operating schedules: 

  • All exams scheduled for 8 am will instead be held at 10 am. 

  • All exams scheduled for 1 pm will instead be held at 3 pm. 

  • There will be no change to exams scheduled for 6:30 pm. 

  • All offices and athletics facilities will open at 10 am. 

  • There will be no change to campus dining hours and Samuel C. Williams Library hours.  

While the Stevens Shuttle will operate on a normal schedule, riders should prepare for possible delays due to the weather. All community members traveling to campus should plan for extra travel time, and those using mass transit are encouraged to check operational status with NJ Transit

Stevens transitioning to remote operations as of 11 a.m. today

Stevens is transitioning to remote operations on Friday, September 29 due to flooding conditions in the local area. All classes will be held remotely beginning at 11:00 a.m. Students who are not able to make it to class on time due to the weather conditions should contact their faculty member. Faculty and staff who are on campus, with the exception of designated essential employees, may choose to stay on campus or may work remotely. Road conditions are difficult and there is a lot of congestion and flooding at Hoboken exit points. Before getting on the road, please check the weather forecast to find an optimal window for departure.  

America’s Cup and Gateway Cafe will close at 2 pm. Pierce Dining Hall and the UCC will remain open as scheduled.  All athletics and recreation facilities will remain open normal hours. In the event of flooding in campus facilities, contact Campus Police at x5105.

Stevens Campus to Continue Remote Operations Friday, June 9

Out of an abundance of caution, the Stevens campus will continue remote operations on Friday, June 9. All classes will be held online and offices will operate remotely. Essential employees must report to campus. Pierce Cafe will be open 8 am to 3 pm. Pierce Dining Hall, the Samuel C. Williams Library and all athletic and fitness facilities will remain closed. Research labs will remain open and accessible for faculty and students. 

The campus will resume normal operations on Saturday, June 10. If there is any change to this plan, an announcement will be made on Friday.

Stevens Shifting to Remote Operations at 3pm Today, Continues All Day Tomorrow

Due to air quality concerns stemming from the Canadian wildfires, the Stevens campus will shift to remote operations beginning at 3 pm today. Remote operations will continue through the end of the day tomorrow, June 8. Those employees who can work remotely should do so. Essential employees must report to campus. Classes beginning at 3 pm or later today and all classes scheduled for tomorrow will be held online. Individuals living in Stevens housing can remain on campus but should stay indoors and take precautions. 

Please note: 

  • All outdoor activities are cancelled. 

  • Athletic and recreational facilities are closed.  

  • The UCC will remain open, but the administrative offices and the fitness center will be closed. 

  • The Samuel C. Williams Library will be closed.  

  • Pierce Dining Hall will close at 3 pm today and will remain closed tomorrow. It will reopen on Friday, June 9 at 8 am, conditions permitting. 

  • Research labs will remain open and accessible for faculty and students. 

  • The Student-Facing Staff Summit scheduled for tomorrow, June 8, will be postponed. 

Take Precautions 

In Hoboken, the air quality is currently in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Red Zone and remains in the unhealthy category.  

Some members of the general public may experience health effects, while members of sensitive groups, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young, may experience more serious health effects. All individuals should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time outdoors. 

A limited number of N95 and KN95 masks are available at the Howe Center Desk for essential employees who must remain on campus and residential students who are in a medically vulnerable group.

Return to Campus Information; Boil Water Still in Effect on Stevens Campus Until 5 p.m.

Stevens will resume all normal on-campus operations on Saturday, March 4. Students may return to campus beginning Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Please note that the university will continue with remote operations and classes through the end of the day Friday. Administrative offices will open, and in-person classes will resume on Monday, March 6. All academic buildings and labs will reopen Friday morning at 8 a.m. for research activities. The status of additional facilities is as follows: 

  • Pierce Dining Hall hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Friday.  

  • University Center hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Friday. 

  • Samuel C. Williams Library will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. today; it will close at 9 p.m. on Friday in keeping with normal hours.   

  • All athletic facilities, dining locations, the University Center and Samuel C. Williams Library will resume regular schedules and operations on Saturday. 

Boil Water Precautions Remain Through 5 p.m. Today on the Stevens Campus 

Although the boil water advisory has been lifted for the City of Hoboken, Stevens takes additional precautions before lifting the advisory on campus. Boil water precautions on campus must remain in effect until 5 p.m. today. Until that time, bottled water will remain available at the Howe Center second floor for residential students and students living in Stevens Housing. Residential students should boil their water for at least one minute for the following: washing dishes, drinking, cooking, baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets, and all other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes. After 5 p.m., all faucets should be run 3-5 minutes before use, after which normal water consumption may resume. 

Employee Compensation for Campus Closures and Move to Remote Operations 

If the campus is closed, all exempt employees will receive regular pay for the day of closure(s) or the hours closed and non-exempt employees will receive an amount equivalent to their regular hours of base pay for the day(s) or the hours closed. 

Non-exempt employees called in to work on a day that the university has decided to close due to an unforeseen emergency will receive their regular pay plus an additional payment (of straight time or overtime, depending on the hours worked by the employee that week) for the actual time worked during the time that the campus was closed. 

The Division of Human Resources will send a separate communication with additional details.

Boil Water Advisory; Remote Operations Continue

Late yesterday evening, the City of Hoboken was notified of a precautionary boil water advisory by Veolia, the operator of Hoboken’s water system, as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The precautionary boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice. 

All those in Hoboken, both on and off campus, should boil their water for at least one minute for the following: washing dishes, drinking, cooking, baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets, and all other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes. 

For the health and safety of our campus community, Stevens Dining is taking all necessary precautions, including the use of disposable and paper products and boiling water to appropriate temperatures to prepare meals, for as long as the boil water order remains in effect. 

The water main break was isolated last night and has been replaced. Although water pressure is returning to normal, as repairs are made, future water main breaks are possible as the system stabilizes, due to fluctuations in water pressure. Additionally, water in many buildings on the Stevens campus is serviced by water tanks that must be drained and refilled before water can be safely used. For this reason, students should not return to campus or their Hoboken residences until further notice. The campus will continue with remote learning and remote operations for the rest of the week. We expect to resume normal operations on Monday and will issue a communication by the end of the week about returning to campus. 

As a reminder, bottled water is available at the Howe Center second floor to campus residents and Stevens students who have remained in their Hoboken residences.

Hoboken Water main break update: Change to class schedule, transition to remote operations

The City of Hoboken is experiencing a severe situation that impacts a large number of people on campus and beyond as a result of yesterday’s water main break. The university is adjusting operations to address this highly unusual situation. Undergraduate classes beginning at 2 p.m. and later will be canceled today to allow students residing in Hoboken to travel home or to another destination; graduate classes are not canceled but will be held remotely. Beginning tomorrow, all classes will take place online, without exception, and administrative offices will operate remotely for the rest of this week. 

Information for Students Living On Campus 

All students who live in Stevens Housing and those living in Hoboken who are able to go home or to another destination are asked to do so as soon as possible. Students should remain off campus and outside of Hoboken until further notice. Out-of-state students, in-season student-athletes, and any other students who are unable to go home or to another destination may remain on campus but must confirm their status using this form. We will continue to provide water, food, and portable restroom facilities for those students who are not able to leave campus. 

Information for Students Living Off Campus in Hoboken 

We ask all students living off campus in Hoboken who cannot leave the city at this time to complete this form to advise us of your status. Those living off campus in Hoboken but remaining in the city may come to campus to use the portable restroom facilities, obtain bottled water and have meals at Pierce Dining Hall. Stevens ID will be required.  

All on-campus events will be postponed or canceled until further notice. Facilities status is as follows: 

  • Portable restroom facilities are available at Palmer Circle, near Castle Point Hall and adjacent to Gateway North. Additional facilities are expected this afternoon and will be located at the south end of Walker Gym. 

  • Pierce Dining Hall will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

  • All other Stevens Dining facilities are closed. 

  • Bottled water is available to campus residents at the Howe Center second floor 

  • The University Center will be open from  8 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

  • Samuel C. Williams Library will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; it will close at 9 p.m. on Friday in keeping with normal hours. 

  • All academic buildings and administrative offices are closed until further notice. 

Faculty engaged in essential research activities that require access to on-campus labs may come to campus to secure their research but may not remain in those facilities. These individuals should contact Campus Police in advance at x5105 to coordinate building access.   

It is essential that those remaining on campus use water sparingly and observe strict water conservation practices. Avoid showers and only use portable restroom facilities.

Water main break update: Classes held online Feb 28, offices to work remotely, additional important information

The City of Hoboken continues to address the water main break, which has severely affected water supply and restroom facilities across the Stevens campus. As a result, on Tuesday, February 28, all classes will be held online and all administrative offices will work remotely, with the exception of essential personnel. Faculty should post a zoom link for classes in Canvas.  

The following measures have been taken to address the water supply shortage: 

  • Portable restroom facilities are available at Palmer Circle, near Castle Point Hall, and adjacent to Gateway North. 

  • All dining facilities are closed with the exception of Pierce Dining Hall, which will be open 8 am to 10 pm. 

  • Bottled water is available to campus residents at the Howe Center second floor (Stevens ID required). 

  • The University Center will remain open for community/gatherings, but the UCC Fitness Center will remain closed. 

  • The Library will be open 8 am to midnight. 

  • The Howe Center, Babbio and Gateway buildings will be open but restroom facilities in those buildings should not be used; use the portable facilities instead. 

All administrative offices, the Schaefer Center, Walker Gym, retail dining outlets, and all other labs and classroom buildings will be closed.
