Maritime Security Center

A Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) Center of Excellence

The Maritime Security Center (MSC) is a Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate (S&T) Center of Excellence in port and maritime security that leverages the physical infrastructure and intellectual capital of its academic, industry, and government partners.

The MSC develops and applies a multi-sensor layered approach to enhance Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and MTS resiliency. Led by Stevens Institute of Technology, the center conducts innovative research and develops new tools and technologies.

Established in 2014, the center is founded upon the accomplishments and research conducted under the former Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce (CSR).

The disruption or disabling of vessels, cargo inventory and port facility systems adversely affects everything from homeland security and personal safety to the economy. Our researchers have developed Port Resiliency Assessment tools and Cybersecurity Risk-Based Performance Standards to provide decision-support and mitigation strategies to the U.S. Coast Guard in their missions to enforce the physical and operational safety and security, and resilience of the Marine Transportation System.
