Stevens Hits 10,000 Applications for Class of 2023

The success of alumni, student outcomes and rigorous academics all contribute to Stevens’ record number of applications in another banner year

(Hoboken, N.J. – March 5, 2019) – In the sixth straight year of record-breaking highs, more than 10,000 students applied for undergraduate admission to Stevens Institute of Technology, a milestone in the university’s 149-year history and overall increase of 13 percent over last year.  Applicants to Stevens this year also set an all-time record, both in the number of applications submitted and for the strength of their collective academic profile.

“This is an exciting time for Stevens,” said Jacqueline Williams, dean of undergraduate admissions at Stevens. “In recent years we have seen a significant growth in our national and international reputation thanks to the success of our alumni, our talented students and our first-class faculty, as well as our team’s ongoing recruitment efforts. We are very pleased to see how many motivated, engaged and talented students seek out a Stevens education year after year.”

Notably, Stevens received applications from students representing all 50 states and 95 different countries, underscoring its reach as both a national and global university. Some of the biggest increases were seen from out-of-state students and women, representing a 26.2 and a 17.5 percent change from last year, respectively. Applicants from underrepresented backgrounds also grew 19.5 percent from 2018.

Ongoing recruitment efforts were especially visible this year, as Williams and her team saw an increase in prospective students and families visiting the Stevens campus. This year, a variety of programs continue to grow, including computer science and cybersecurity, civil engineering, a range of technology-infused business programs, as well as visual arts & technology programs in Stevens’ College of Arts and Letters.

“There are 41 undergraduate majors at our campus, and the breadth and quality of our academic offerings are drawing students from all over the country and the world,” said Williams. “From 2011 through 2018, Stevens has seen a 157 percent increase in applications. The demand is very strong.”

This milestone comes on the heels of another banner year for the university in a string of significant achievements: surpassing the most ambitious fundraising campaign in its history, opening its doors to a record-number of faculty, and building a 395,000 square-foot  student housing and university center that will provide a vital new space for student life and engagement at Stevens.

Admitted students will be joining a premiere technology university that consistently ranks at the top of the list for return on investment in higher education. “It’s wonderful to see that prospective students and their families have taken note,” said Williams. “We are looking forward to reviewing all of the applications and enrolling another talented class!”
