Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Announces New Graduate Certificate Programs

The programs explore machine learning applications in the pharmaceutical industry and materials technology for energy and sustainability– key areas of rapidly evolving global importance.

Application of Machine Learning to Pharmaceutical Development Graduate Certificate Program

About the Program

The application of machine learning continues to grow rapidly in a variety of industrial settings, including the pharmaceutical industry where machine learning methodologies have been adopted to accelerate process optimization and material characterization, a trend that is anticipated to rise with the increased rate of data digitization.

The application of machine learning to pharmaceutical development graduate certificate program prepares students to implement machine learning methods and successfully apply them to problems modeled against realistic pharmaceutical development scenarios. The program includes familiarization with the fundamental mathematical and statistical theories that are the basis for many of the algorithms that will be applied throughout the program.

The program helps students develop the skill sets necessary to evaluate and apply the growing portfolio of algorithms from the open source ecosystem and deploy them in the appropriate industrial context. The program also emphasizes the generation of contextualized visualization tools to adequately present results to a wider non-expert audience as well as health authorities, a key aspect of the successful implementation of data science in pharmaceutical development.

Program Outcomes

Program graduates will learn how to identify appropriate machine learning algorithms to solve problems relevant to pharmaceutical development and rigorously evaluate the available data sets for applicability by applying tools in data visualization analysis and feature engineering. They will also be able to efficiently manage machine learning projects in a collaborative environment in situations and organizations similar to those found in the industry.

This program is open to current students and graduates of materials science, chemical, mechanical, and environmental engineering programs as well as those in physics and chemistry.

Materials Technology for Energy and Sustainability Graduate Certificate Program

About the Program

Technology that enables clean power generation is key to sustaining global society and shaping the future while transitioning away from fossil fuels and other drivers of devastating climate change.

The materials technology for energy and sustainability graduate certificate program will provide students with the fundamental basis and practical aspects of materials science and engineering used in sustainable energy technology.

The goal of this program is to engage students in the concept of energy harvesting, conversion, and storage from the perspective of materials, as well as their impact on the economy and policy-making. Students in this program will be able to analyze the challenges and opportunities of materials design and processing in the energy sector and provide sustainable solutions in the relevant technological and societal context.

Program Outcomes

Program graduates will learn how to read, analyze, and evaluate key data sets relevant to the sustainable energy industry. Additionally, they will obtain hands-on knowledge of the latest processing and analysis tools for renewable technology. They will also be able to determine and apply materials selection criteria to engage in collaborative projects to address sustainable energy challenges.

This program is open to current students and graduates of materials science, chemical, mechanical, and environmental engineering programs as well as those in physics and chemistry.
