In an interconnected and data-driven world, modern society relies on increasingly complex systems. Industrial and Systems Engineering is about improving the efficiency and effectiveness of these systems to solve relevant, real-world problems.

What is Industrial and Systems Engineering?

Industrial and systems engineering draws people who are curious, insightful and driven by engineering interfaces because industrial and systems engineering considers multiple users and interactions when designing and improving systems. It asks the engineer to think about many factors at once: How can one design this solution so that it will be sustainable? How much will it cost to implement this solution? How many people will need to staff or support this solution? How long will this solution take to implement?

Solutions are determined through simulation, which is a technique that allows engineers to examine something that would be difficult to study directly. It is also done through optimization, allowing one to provide the most optimal solution for almost any mathematical scenario you can think of, from determining the location of manufacturing facilities to staffing production lines to designing a system to better interact with its user. It is a field of study that produces manufacturers, CEOs, designers, data scientists, government workers, bankers, healthcare professionals and everything in between!

Today, engineers with strong roots in engineering and science, and data analysis acumen are needed to improve technology and processes in enterprises. The bachelor of engineering (B.E.) in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) program at Stevens prepares you with cross-disciplinary, big picture systems perspectives and knowledge to engineer, develop and maintain complex systems in multiple industries including manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, transportation, energy, finance, entertainment, service and more.

About the Industrial and Systems Engineering Program at Stevens

In the ISE program, you’ll learn how to design, manage and implement solutions to improve quality, performance and efficiency. You'll develop a skillset to learn how to do things better at the enterprise level such as how increase customer satisfaction, improve efficiencies, decrease costs and reduce waste in enterprise operations. By the time you complete the ISE program, you will be well positioned to drive entire organizations toward success, making them invaluable technical leaders in industry and government with the application-driven toolkit enabling you to seek and implement solutions to enterprise system challenges.

Students in the Industrial Systems and Engineering program have the opportunity to delve into complex systems study at the Center for Complex Systems & Enterprises (CCSE) Immersion Lab. Students also have an opportunity to interact with world-class researchers from the Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) on relevant research topics.

Sample Core Courses

The Industrial Systems and Engineering course curriculum includes:

  • Informatics and Software Development

  • Innovative System Design

An ABET Accredited Program

This undergraduate program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

The Difference at Stevens

Faculty at Stevens understand that tomorrow’s engineers require the skills to use data to build modern, efficient systems. That's precisely why our Industrial and Systems Engineering program is data intensive. SSE faculty teach students how to extract useful data from information enterprises and how to apply it in mathematical models and analytical tools to gain insight to inform problem solving and decision support.

Message From the Director

Dr. Kathryn Abel, Dr. Kathryn Abel, Undergraduate Industrial & Systems Engineering Program Director

"Industrial and systems engineers are increasingly in demand for their valuable systems approach to complex, highly interconnected products and processes. Stevens industrial and systems engineers bring an in-depth knowledge of data analytics to their distributed decision-making approach that allows them to address unstructured problems and create innovative, optimized and impactful solutions that help businesses adapt to new technologies and situations that increase efficiency while reducing industrial costs.

"The curriculum is designed to teach and focus students on:

  • Thinking about the ways in which technology can help organizations accomplish goals

  • Applying systems analytics and data science to engineering design

"This creates engineers with a larger perspective on systems. With the capability to use data to develop a big-picture model of systems, analyze problems and optimize system quality and performance, our ISE graduates are assets to enterprises."
