Stevens Institute of Technology to Require COVID-19 Vaccine for All Students, Faculty and Staff in Planning for an On-Campus Fall 2021 Semester

Decision based on input from faculty, staff and students, along with the expanded eligibility for and availability of the COVID-19 vaccine

(Hoboken, N.J – April 22, 2021) – Stevens Institute of Technology plans for a full on-campus experience in the fall 2021 semester and will require all members of the campus community, including students, faculty and staff, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning to campus.

This decision, announced today by Stevens’ President Nariman Farvardin, was based on input from faculty, staff and students, along with the expanded eligibility for and availability of the COVID-19 vaccine. This requirement will allow Stevens to plan for a fully in-person, on-campus academic year starting with the fall 2021 semester, including in-person classes, on-campus research and a full range of social events and activities.

“Like all institutions of higher education, we are eager to return to a full on-campus experience. We are confident that requiring the COVID-19 vaccination – as well as maintaining the health and safety protocols we have instituted over the past year – will not only allow us to plan for a safe return this fall, but also increase our community’s contribution to achieving herd immunity,” said President Farvardin.

All students, full and part-time, as well as faculty and staff who are required to be on campus, must be inoculated with a COVID-19 vaccine that has been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before returning to campus in the fall. Limited exemptions will be considered and the process for requesting an exemption will be communicated by the Division of Human Resources for Stevens employees and by Student Health Services for Stevens students.

“This has been a difficult year and I’m proud of the Stevens community and our collective efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” said Farvardin. “I’m confident that the upcoming academic year will bring us back to where we would all like to be, which is teaching and learning in a safe and healthy environment.”
