Stevens Alumni Volunteer Voices: ShaQ Thomas ’15 M.Eng. ’21

ShaQ Thomas ’15 M.Eng. ’21 learned the value of building relationships at Stevens through several undergraduate student leadership roles. He has a deep appreciation for the conversations and connections that helped him build a successful career in cybersecurity and is now returning the favor to the next generation of Stevens students as an alumni volunteer.

How/why did you decide to contribute your time as a Stevens volunteer?

As an undergrad, I leveraged the connections and experience I gained as a student leader, and that helped me develop professionally. Once I graduated, I saw the Stevens alumni community as an extension of what I experienced – and loved – as a student. I carry that same philosophy as an alumnus. Staying close to Stevens helps me grow professionally and make an impact in the communities I'm involved in. Being a Stevens volunteer allows me to connect, learn and grow with generations of brilliant scholars.

What excites you most about what you do for Stevens?

I enjoy the many opportunities to connect with alumni and am excited about building a network that benefits current and future Stevens students. Through the Engagement Committee, initiatives like building regional networks to connect alumni based on their geolocation provide impactful ways to build relationships regardless of location.

How has volunteering for Stevens impacted you personally?

Volunteering at Stevens has made a positive impact on my professional journey. Staying connected allows me to meet alumni from various industries, opening my eyes to opportunities I would never have explored otherwise. I owe a great deal to these conversations, as they helped me build a successful career in cybersecurity.

What do you feel is the impact of alumni involvement in the university?

Alumni involvement shapes the future of the university. Alumni are the walking success stories of a Stevens experience and education. As fields and industries evolve, it's important for alumni to volunteer their time back to the university to inspire students and to help shape the future of our alma mater.

What would you say to other alumni who were considering volunteering at Stevens?

A little goes a long way. There are so many ways to volunteer as a Stevens alum. Reconnect with the student organizations you knew and loved during your time at Stevens or spend some time on Stevens Connect to learn about opportunities that align with your interests.
