Netflix Launch Manager Taylore Fowler ’14 Ensures a Seamless Viewing Experience
Have you ever stopped to consider the many elements – trailer, images, cast list, plot summary, ratings – that go into helping you decide on a program to stream? Netflix Product Discovery & Promotion Launch Manager Taylore Fowler ’14 is part of the team behind the experience that helps viewers make the right choice.
The next time you’re browsing Netflix for something to watch, take a minute to notice all of the information available to help you make your pick. A one- or two-sentence plot summary, eye-catching images, a list of cast members and more are all provided for you to decide if a particular movie or series will interest you. Taylore Fowler ’14, Product Discovery & Promotion Launch Manager for Netflix’s original content in the Nordic countries, is part of the team that puts it all together to help viewers around the world choose a program to watch.
Fowler’s current home in Stockholm is a long way from Belmar, New Jersey, where she found a passion for music and a path to Stevens. “I began playing the flute when I was very young, but as I got older, I also developed an interest in the intersection of music and technology,” she says. “I liked the way Stevens’ Music & Technology program infused the two disciplines. I was able to dive into music theory while getting hands-on practice with the technical aspects of music production.”
In addition to the curriculum, Fowler appreciated the experience her professors brought to the classroom, and she enjoyed the university’s close proximity to New York City. Music remained a priority: she played first flute and piccolo in seven different Stevens band ensembles, even orchestrating a piece for the Stevens Wind Ensemble Spring Concert Band. While studying abroad with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in Vienna, Fowler wrote a composition that was performed in the Palais Corbelli IES Center.
Fowler rounded out her Stevens experience by serving as a campus tour guide and Alpha Phi Omega pledge secretary and participating in the Stevens Technical Enrichment Program (STEP). “STEP really stands out among my Stevens memories,” she says, noting that she also served as a STEP ambassador. “The STEP program helped me overcome my worries about starting college and living away from home for the first time. The friends I made in STEP still remain some of the closest in my life.”
Before completing her degree, the Martha Bayard Stevens Scholarship recipient had also been inducted into the Gear & Triangle Society and the Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society. She also met her now fiancé at Stevens; the two will be married in October.
Fowler took advantage of as many career-building opportunities as possible while a student, completing internships with powerhouse media companies like Sesame Workshop and Viacom’s MTV and participating in summer research projects as often as possible. “The internships were especially helpful,” she points out. “I was able to meet people who worked in a wide variety of roles. By gaining insight into the different aspects of production, I was able to chart my own career path with confidence.”
“My first job after graduation was with Disney Publishing Worldwide, where I worked with established and up-and-coming authors,” Fowler continues. “I wanted to get back to music, though. As soon as I saw an opportunity, I shifted to Disney Music Group where I managed social media marketing campaigns for movie soundtracks, including the live-action Beauty and the Beast and Moana, and recording artists.”
Fowler joined Netflix more than seven years ago, first as Project Manager for Creative Production covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) based in Los Angeles and then for a similar role in Amsterdam. “Netflix had long been on my radar,” she says. “My current job is to ensure a seamless experience for the launch of our original content stemming from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. It is exciting to bring these stories to members all over the world.”
One of her favorite recent titles she worked on launching was The Remarkable Life of Ibelin. This documentary feature was widely acclaimed at the Sundance Film Festival, the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, and by numerous other national and international award panels.
Living in Sweden has made it difficult to align her visits to the U.S. with Stevens alumni events, but she is in close touch with her college friends and mentors. “They keep me up to date with what’s going on at the university,” she says.
“At Stevens, you get so many opportunities to explore what you’re passionate about,” Fowler adds. “It is a great place to soak up as much knowledge and experience as possible. And when you’re ready, the community will help you connect to the career of your dreams. It’s what sets Stevens apart.”
