Summer Research Programs

Summer is a great time to get involved in extracurricular research; there is plenty of time to focus and make progress on your project. There are many avenues for pursuing summer research, including formal programs at Stevens and other universities. Information about these programs can be found in the Stevens Portal for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships.

Summer Undergraduate Research Programs at Stevens

As a student in the Stevens School of Business, the Department of Mechanical Engineering or the Department of Systems Engineering, you will have the opportunity to apply to a part-time summer undergraduate research program led by faculty in your department.

The Stevens Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Center for Sustainability also host full-time summer undergraduate research programs that are open to all Stevens undergraduates. Enrolled students can learn more about these programs and their deadlines by visiting the Portal for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships.

External Summer Research Internships

There are hundreds of formal summer research programs at institutes across the country. These programs are often referred to as Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). They are hosted by a university, college or research-intensive institute, where a student spends eight to 10 weeks over the summer conducting research. This is a great opportunity to see what it would be like to pursue a full-time research career. You’ll often be working alongside graduate students and faculty to hone your technical and critical thinking skills. REUs may also include programming designed to prepare students for graduate school, including workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities.

If you are interested in applying to an REU, it is useful to start prepping your applications in the fall for early deadlines and be read to submit multiple applications in the first couple of months of the year. Databases that curate and advertise REUs include those hosted by Científico Latino, Pathways to Science, and Princeton Engineering. Other databases are hosted by the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health and many others.
