Pre-Professional and Accelerated Programs

Introduction

If you’re interested in pursuing a professional career in medicine, dentistry or law, our pre-professional programs won’t just point you in the right direction, they’ll take you all the way to the finish line.

Stevens offers several comprehensive pre-law and pre-med program options, an unbeatable location for internships and a rich slate of support services to ensure you excel in the rigorous environment of professional school.

Pre-Health (Pre-Medicine and Pre-Dentistry)

To prepare yourself for the health professions including medical or dental school, you need an education based on a strong foundation in the sciences, a solid background in social science and humanities, and highly developed communication skills. The pre-health profession curricula at Stevens meet these needs and offer challenging courses of study that match your ambition and demand the very best of you to ensure your success. Students within any major can choose to follow this path, they just need to ensure that they integrate the below course curriculum into their degree.  Recent successful applicants have had majors which include Chemical Biology, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Business & Technology, and Mechanical Engineering. Students who complete this advisory program track leave Stevens with the following courses which satisfy the minimum requirements for admission to accredited U.S. medical and dental schools:

  • One year of general chemistry with laboratory (CH 115, CH 116, CH 117, CH 118)

  • One year of organic chemistry with laboratory (CH 243, CH 244, CH245, CH 246)

  • One year of biology with laboratory (BIO 291 and BIO 382)

  • One year of physics with laboratory (PEP 111, PEP 112, PEP 221, PEP 222)

  • One year of mathematics through calculus (MA 121, MA 122, MA 125, MA 126)

  • One year of English including composition (CAL 103 and CAL 105)

We recommend the following additional courses for those seeking admission to medical or dental school:

You should complete the required courses by the end of your junior year at Stevens, and take the appropriate national exam. You are also strongly encouraged to participate in summer research or hospital service by the end of your junior year. An interview and letter written by the Stevens Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) is required by most U.S. medical schools. Whatever your goal, an advisor at Stevens will help ensure you’re on track.

Accelerated Combined Degree Programs

The Fast Track to Fulfilling Your Dream

Our accelerated programs offer combined degrees in partnership with esteemed medical and law schools - allowing you to seamlessly obtain your bachelor's and professional degree in less time.  Let us take the guesswork out of course requirements, volunteer service, test preparation and the application process so you can focus on what's most important: achieving your goals.

Accelerated Combined Degree Programs

Accelerated programs are Stevens degree programs paired with a medical or law school, and are intended for exceptionally qualified students. In medicine, the Accelerated Pre-Medicine program is paired with the medical program at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University, the oldest medical school in New Jersey.  The student applies to both Stevens and the Medical School.  In law, the Accelerated Law program is paired with Seton Hall University School of Law.

To apply for an accelerated program, you submit a full application to Stevens as a high school senior, and indicate your interest in the accelerated degree program on your application. Your application will be reviewed by Stevens, as well as by the medical or law school. If you’re admitted to an accelerated program, you will take a predetermined set of courses at Stevens and then transfer to the professional school at the end of three years. Stevens confers the bachelor's degree after successful completion of your first year of medical or law school, and the M.D. or J.D. degree is awarded by the professional school when you complete their regular medical or law program.
