Behind the Stitch

Exploring the history of the embroidery and lace industry in Hudson County, New Jersey

Since 1872, Northern New Jersey has been referred to as the "Embroidery Capital of the World," which was one of the biggest small businesses in the area until it’s decline in the early 2000’s. The history of this industry, which was a big part of the local community for decades and sustained by immigrant communities, is now being preserved in the Archives & Special Collections department of the Samuel C. Williams Library at Stevens Institute of Technology. The artistry of embroidery and lace connects many cultural groups in America, and it is important to document experiences and cultural traditions to ensure future generations can engage with and understand the past.

Please join us to discover the history behind the embroidery and lace industry in Hudson County.

The presentation will feature Leah Loscutoff, Head of Archives and Special Collections at the Samuel C. Williams Library at Stevens, Dr. Silvio Laccetti, a retired Stevens history professor who played a key role in preserving this legacy, and Meriam Lobel, developer of the 2001 exhibit, "The Cultural Thread: 130 Years of Embroidery and Lace in New Jersey."
