Program Length: Two Weeks

Tour several cutting-edge engineering disciplines while working alongside our world-renowned faculty in the lab, designing your own engineering project.

Introduction to Coding & App Design

Ever had a good idea for a smartphone app? Whether you have coding experience or not, we’ll help you design your own game or app and learn the art and beauty of computer programming. Channel your diverse and personal interests into a tangible application: international development, dance, fighting disease — you name it. Creativity is welcome! You’ll learn more than logic and problem solving: you’ll learn ways in which coding skills can change lives and make a difference in the world. This program covers the basics necessary to understand, design, and develop Android applications utilizing Android Studio and the Java programming language.

Topics will include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

  •  Computer fundamentals 
  • Logic and computation
  • Installing Android SDK and other development tools
  • Designing the user interface
  • Displaying images and menus using Views
  • Saving user preferences
  • Interfacing with location-based services
  • Coding hackathon

Intermediate Computer Science

Experience the newest frontiers in computer science — areas that have never even been taught at Stevens before. This fresh series is packed with accelerated modules on topics such as algorithms, scientific computing, programming language design, compiles, Android development. You’ll see how computer science is changing the professional world through hands-on projects under the mentorship of our expert faculty.

Program Length: Two Weeks

Pre-Med Biology

Did you know that a scientific research background is the most popular preparation for medical school? Just like a real pre-med. student, you’ll attend lectures and labs that touch on biology, biochemistry and drug discovery. You’ll also visit New York-area academic and biotech research laboratories to see first-hand how advances in medical science are made.

Pre-Med Biomedical Engineering

More and more, college students are choosing engineering as an approach to a career in the medical field. Find out why in this exhilarating crash course in biomedical engineering. Learn by doing in hands-on labs while you work side-by-side with senior researchers.

Program Length: One Week

Civil Engineering Design & Architecture

The sun drives most terrestrial energy sources including oil, coal, gas, photovoltaics, wind, hydro, and biofuels. The question therefore is not if but how we use the sun to power our world. In this program, we will investigate how to design a building that derives all of its need for energy directly from the sun. Each student will design their own solar cottage on a chosen site. Outputs will be an accurately geolocated 3D computer model animation that includes solar shading and insolation data as well as a 3D printed prototype of some aspect of the design.

Modules may include:

  • Sustainable design concepts for engineering and architecture
  • Principles low energy building design.
  • Principles of passive and active solar systems design
  • Physical solar modeling including apps and analog tools
  • SketchUp 3D modeling: geolocation, site context modeling, solar studies, energy modeling plugins, 3D printing

 Cyber security is a high-growth field currently experiencing a demand far greater than the supply of trained professionals available. As the need for data security increases in all industries including medicine, banking, and homeland security, the demand for professionals with knowledge in the areas of information assurance and computer security continues to grow. 

The evolution of cyber security is a continuous race between intruders and defenders. Both use the same programming methods, tools and resources either to create a smart malware or to develop intelligent protection mechanisms. Join us this summer, and learn how to Hack and Secure a system!

Program Length: One Week

Engineering Bootcamp

You know you want to go into engineering and science, but you're not sure which engineering discipline you're interested in.  Designed as a 1-week crash course in engineering, this boot camp will expose you to 6 different engineering disciplines, take you on a site visit to a local company, allow you to work alongside our world-renowned faculty and work in groups to design your own research project.
