Provost's Lecture Series on Women in Leadership: Corinna Cortes

Finding Similar Items in Web Time

Corinna Cortes, Head of Google Research, NY

The Provost's Lecture Series on Women in Leadership, which showcases prominent and successful women in leadership positions and motivates the next generation of women leaders, kicks off with inaugural speaker Corinna Cortes on Oct. 26, 2012 at 2 p.m. in Babbio 122, with a reception to follow in the Babbio Atrium.

Corinna Cortes is the Head of Google Research, NY, where she is working on a broad range of theoretical and applied large-scale machine learning problems. Prior to Google, Cortes spent more than ten years at AT&T Labs - Research, formerly AT&T Bell Labs, where she held a distinguished research position. Cortes is well-known for her contributions to the theoretical foundations of support vector machines (SVMs), for which she received the 2008 Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award. She was also awarded the AT&T Science and Technology Medal in 2000 for her her work on data-mining in very large data sets. Cortes received her M.S. in Physics from the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and joined AT&T Bell Labs as a researcher in 1989. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Rochester in 1993.

Cortes' presentation is entitled, "Finding similar items in web time." Today's large-scale data sets and streams present machine learning with unprecedented challenges in keeping up with the deluge of records to be processed and scored. Cortes will discuss some of the algorithmic advances and implementation solutions designed at Google to effectively and efficiently handle these problems. She'll discuss machine learning examples from a number of Google applications including Image, Video, and Structured Data Search.
