J-1 Students & Student Interns

The purpose of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program is to promote international educational and cultural exchange in order to develop mutual understanding between the people of the US and other countries. The US Department of State administers the Exchange Visitor Program, and it assigns certain cultural and educational institutions, such as Stevens, as sponsors to administer its program. Designated ISSS staff members serve as representatives, known as Responsible Officers or Alternate Responsible Officers, and they help administer the exchange visitor program for Stevens. The International Student and Scholar Services office is responsible for all student and scholar related immigration documents and advisement on DS-2019's, employment authorization, maintenance of status and international travel. Under U.S. law, you are fully responsible for abiding by the rules governing your J-1 student status. International Student and Scholar Services will do its best to help you understand these rules, but you are required to follow the rules and responsibilities of student status explained on the Maintenance of Status and Student Employment pages.
