Frequently Asked Questions
Is the GRE required?
Submission of the GRE is recommended but not mandatory for degrees offered through the Stevens-Beacon Partnership Program for applicants in China.
Will my degree indicate that the program was completed "online"?
No. Your diploma and transcripts will not indicate that the degree is completed online and will be identical to those of a student who completes his or her studies on the Stevens campus.
When should I apply?
The application is now open. Students are encouraged to apply 3-4 months before they wish to begin their studies. Please refer to the Application Deadlines section of this page for more information.
How fast can I complete the online degree program?
The online M.S. in Computer Science program requires 30 credit hours of coursework. Students in the Stevens-Beacon programs will complete two 3-credit courses per term and will finish their program in five semesters. Stevens offers three semesters per year (Fall, Spring, and Summer), so students will complete the program in approximately 20 months (about one and a half years).
Is the IELTS or TOEFL required?
Depending on your native language and academic background, you may be required to either a) provide proof of English language proficiency by submitting the results of an English language proficiency exam, such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo, or b) complete an English language proficiency interview. More information can be found on the application requirements page.
Can I transfer to the on-campus program if I start with the online program?
Yes, students wishing to be considered for study on Stevens’ campus in Hoboken, New Jersey must submit an application to be considered for admission to the full-time, on-campus program. We recommend students submit their application by the end of their first term of enrollment. Students must successfully complete two semesters (12 credits) of study in the online program before transitioning to on-campus study. It is important to note that the credit hour requirement to complete the on-campus program differs (36 credits). Full-time students must meet different admissions requirements and are charged different tuition and fees. International students must also secure an I-20 and visa if they wish to study in the United States (more information on the I-20 available here). More information can be found on the application requirements page.
What is the relationship between Stevens Institute and Beacon Education?
Stevens Institute of Technology has partnered with Beacon Education to offer the M.S. in Computer Science program in a part-time, fully online format to working professionals living in China. Beacon Education is the exclusive provider of this program in China.
Is the Stevens-Beacon coursework different from the on-campus program?
Students who begin the M.S. in Computer Science online as part of the Stevens-Beacon partnership and successfully transfer to on-campus study will be required to complete 36 credits of coursework (rather than 30 credits) to fulfill the degree requirements. The online Stevens-Beacon program is cohort-based, which means each entering class moves through a prescribed series of courses as a group.
What’s the maximum time in which I can finish the degree program?
The online program is designed to be completed in 20 months. If a student wishes to take fewer than two courses per term, they should speak to their Academic Advisor. Students may elect to complete their program at a slower pace; however, a maximum of six years is allowed for the completion of a graduate degree.
How should I pay my tuition?
Tuition and fee payment will be facilitated by our partner, Beacon Education Limited, along with its affiliates (北京彼岸京华教育科技有限公司).
