Ferpa Policy

FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). This law protects the privacy of student education records with respect to data and information collected by Stevens, and the University’s practices and procedures that protect those rights. FERPA applies to all schools that receive funds through an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education, and thus most postsecondary schools are covered by FERPA.

The Policy, which appears in the University Policy Library as Section 10.2.6 and is available in the Office of the Registrar upon request.

Stevens’ FERPA Policy provides procedures for Stevens students to assert their rights to:

  • (a) inspect and review their education records;

  • (b) seek amendment of their education records;

  • (c) consent to disclosures of information contained in their education records; and

  • (d) file a complaint with the United States Department of Education concerning compliance with the requirements of FERPA.

The FERPA Policy also (i) lists categories of information designated by Stevens as “directory information,” which is information that may be made available to the general public unless the Office of the Registrar receives notification in writing that the information should be kept confidential and (ii) makes clear that access, use, discuss, release and disclose education records when they have a legitimate educational need to the information as required by their job duties and (iii) describes the circumstances under which Stevens may disclose a student’s education records without the student’s consent.

The FERPA Release form, which students may use to authorize the release of their education records, is available on Workday for student to complete. It can be found by selecting the Requests application on your Workday homepage, then selecting “Create Request.”

Students who wish to file a complaint under FERPA should do so in writing, addressed to the Family Policy Compliance Office:
