Fee Descriptions

Undergraduate

General Service Fee (Undergraduate)

The General Service Fee is assessed to all enrolled undergraduate students including without limitation all students who access their classes online or in-person or who are enrolled in the Co-operative education program (Co-op). This fee helps to defray the costs of many support and administrative services that the university provides to all students regardless of the number of credits they are taking or whether they are studying on or off campus. The administrative and support services include: the Career Center, Undergraduate Academics, the Academic Support Center, student success centers located in Stevens’ Schools and College, the Writing and Communications Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Services, Wellness Education, Disability Services, Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, the Office of the Registrar, the Library, Student Accounts, Athletics and Recreation, and Student Affairs (including Title IX oversight, the Office of the Dean of Students, Orientation, Diversity Education and the STEP Office). In addition, some Information Technology (IT) and Facilities costs, such as lab maintenance and equipment, materials, classroom technology, IT infrastructure (e.g., servers and network hubs), cybersecurity measures, software licenses, and user support services are also partially subsidized by the General Service fee.

Student Activity Fee (Undergraduate)

The Student Activity Fee (SAF) is assessed to all enrolled undergraduate students including without limitation all students who access their classes online or in-person or who are enrolled in Co-op. This fee directly supports the Student Government Association (SGA), whose leadership is elected by the student body. The SGA allocates funds to clubs and organizations for their programs and activities (virtual and in-person), and for software contracts and platforms like DuckLink, that are used by students and student organizations to stay connected.

Graduate

General Service Fee (Graduate)

The General Service Fee helps to defray the costs incurred by the university in providing many support and administrative services that graduate students receive. The support and academic services include the Career Center, Graduate Academics and Student Success (which includes advisement, tutoring and student success programs), the Writing and Communication Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Services, Wellness Education, Disability Services, Graduate Admissions, Financial Aid, the Office of the Registrar, the Library, and Student Accounts. In addition, some Information Technology (IT) and Facilities costs, such as lab maintenance and equipment, materials, classroom technology, IT infrastructure (e.g., servers and network hubs), cyber security measures, software licenses, and user support services, are also partially subsidized by the General Service fee. 

The full-time Graduate General Service Fee is assessed to all enrolled graduate students registered in 9 or more credits including without limitation all students who access their classes online or in-person or who are enrolled in Co-op. The part-time Graduate General Service Fee is assessed to all graduate students enrolled in less than 9 credits including without limitation all students who access their classes online or in-person or who are enrolled in Maintenance of Full-Time Status or Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

Student Activity Fee (Graduate)

The Student Activity Fee is assessed to all graduate students registered in 9 or more credits, including without limitation all students who access their classes online or in-person or who are enrolled in Co-op. This fee supports administrative units that provide virtual and in-person academic support, co-curricular engagement, and professional development opportunities, among other things, to graduate students. It also provides funding to graduate student clubs and organizations.

Graduate Degree Fee- Graduate

The Graduate Degree Fee- Graduate is charged for final audit and approval in completing an academic degree program. Additional fees will be charged for each individual degree awarded. Additional charges will apply for Graduate Certificate(s) earned along with a graduate degree. Each fee will be assessed regardless of the student's decision to attend a commencement ceremony.

Certificate Fee – Graduate

The Certificate Fee- Graduate is charged for final audit and approval in completing the academic certificate program. Additional fees will be charged for each individual certificate awarded. Each fee will be assessed regardless of the student's decision to attend a commencement ceremony.

Maintenance of Full-Time Status Fee

Students who have completed all required credits, and who need to maintain full-time status while completing a thesis, special project, dissertation, project, or other degree requirement, must enroll for Maintenance of Full-Time Status (DEAN 999).

Maintenance of Active Record Fee

Students who have completed all degree requirements (including their thesis for a Master’s or Doctorate) but need to keep their academic record active, must enroll in DEAN 890 and pay this fee.

Course by Examination Fee

The Course by Examination Fee covers the cost of preparing, administering, and grading an exam that, if passed, will be recognized as satisfying the requirement for transfer of credits in certain subjects.
