Hugo Neu Corporation Sustainability Seminar Series: Sustainable Waste Management
Department of Civil, Environmental, and Ocean Engineering
Speaker: Kevin J. George, Manager, Sustainability Reporting and Data Analytics
ABSTRACT
Organizations generate an increasing amount of waste as a byproduct of their day-to-day activities and operations. Improperly managed waste can have significant impacts to both the environment and human health. In recent years, there has been a strategic shift from trying to minimize the amount of waste generated to examining where in the value chain waste can be prevented and encouraging a circular economy. New practices in sustainable materials management (SMM) are allowing organizations to reduce their intensity of waste generated, reuse materials for longer periods of time, and more effectively manage the end-of-life when waste is discarded. In many cases, SMM practices are both environmentally and financially beneficial. Standard bearers such as the United Nations (via the Sustainable Development Goals), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) have developed reporting standards that allow all stakeholders to better understand an organizations effectiveness at managing waste.
