Mathematics Immersion Program (MIP)
The Mathematics Immersion Program (MIP) is a three-week summer program for currently matriculating undergraduates who are recipients of a New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) grant. MIP is an EOF funded program hosted at Stevens Institute of Technology and facilitated by its EOF staff.
The program traditionally runs from the second Sunday in July through the last Friday in July.
The primary goals of MIP are to help EOF students:
Increase their confidence in and comfort with mathematics.
Improve their understanding and application of general mathematics concepts.
Gain a better understanding of the role of mathematics in their daily lives and in their chosen major/careers.
MIP is a challenging academic program with rewarding social experiences. Based on their performance on an in-house mathematics diagnostic test, the students are placed in an appropriate mathematics courses, including: Pre-Algebra/Algebra, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus/Calculus. The daily schedule includes academic instruction, tutoring and other academic assistance provided by current Stevens students, and professional and personal development seminars. Networking, community building and other social events, also are included in the three-week schedule. MIP participants are housed in a Stevens on campus residence hall, have meals in the University main dining hall, and are provided with Duckbills (Stevens money) to be used at local eating establishments. All participants are required to reside on campus during the week and return home for the weekends. This residential requirement allows students the opportunity to develop friendships with peers from other New Jersey colleges and universities, as well as work together to gain shared experiences about mathematics and its role in the world after college.
