Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

Save the Date: Spring 2026

Why 3MT?

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, originally developed at the University of Queensland in 2008, challenges students to present the essence of their research in just three minutes using language that connects with both specialists and non-specialists. It helps participants build strong communication skills, preparing them to share their work at conferences and to excel in academic and professional career paths.

Beyond individual skill-building, 3MT highlights the value of research to the broader community and fosters collaboration and scholarly exchange across disciplines.

Who Can Compete and How the Competition Works?

To participate, students must be actively enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the School of Engineering and Science or the School of Business, and must have passed their qualifying examinations before delivering their first 3MT presentation.

The competition is organized in two rounds: first at the department level during the Fall semester, followed by the university-wide event in early Spring. Winners from each department will advance to the university level, where the first-place winner will earn the opportunity to represent Stevens at the regional 3MT competition hosted by the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS).

All interested doctoral students are encouraged to attend the 3MT information session as well as preparation workshops. Additional details about the competition will be shared with students through an email announcement in mid-September.
