Smart Infrastructure Lab
The Smart Infrastructure Lab develops advanced sensing technologies, materials, and machine intelligence algorithms for intelligent, resilient, and sustainable (IRS) infrastructure.
IRS infrastructure will improve resilience, sustainability, durability, and functionality by seamlessly integrating innovative structural design, smart sensors, multifunctional materials, and machine intelligence for perception and optimization.
Research
There are four main thrust areas for intelligent, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure:
Structural Design and Evaluation
Development of innovative structures such as reconfigurable modular structures:
Resilient: high load-carrying capacity, high ductility, high resistance to earthquake, fire, impact, fatigue, and corrosion
Sustainable: capable of being reused rather than recycled, repurposed, and fabricated using low-carbon materials
Reconfigurable: capable of responding and adapting to structural conditions and external events by changing structural configuration
Durable: use of durable materials and smart sensors for timely condition assessment
Multifunctionality: use of multifunctional materials, use of smart sensors
Fiber Optic Sensors
Development of distributed fiber optic sensors:
Measure detailed strain distributions (sub-mm spatial resolution)
Detect, locate, and quantify cracks (multiple invisible cracks as narrow as microcracks)
Detect, locate, and quantify delamination / debonding
Detect, locate, and quantify corrosion
Measure high temperature (more than 1000 ºC) in real fire
Machine Intelligence
Development of intelligent algorithms:
Classification: detection and classification of anomalies in structures based on computer vision
Prediction: logic-guided and physics-informed neural networks for predicting properties of materials and structures
Optimization: adpative metaheuristic optimization algorithms, game theory-based optimization
Digital twin and 3D reconstruction: 3D digital models ingrating sensing and mechine perception capabilities
Multifunctional Construction Materials
Development of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCCs):
Resilient: strain-hardening property, high tensile strength, high tensile ductility, high fire resistance
Sustainable: negative-carbon materials using low-carbon materials and carbon sequestration
Durable: multi-scale structured matrix with low permeability, crack width control, self-healing of cracks
Multifunctionality: self-sensing, self-cleaning, air-purifying, 3D printable
The Smart Infrastructure Laboratory is housed with a 500 square ft space with loading docks. The Smart Infrastructure Laboratory is currently under renovation, and the loading system will be upgraded to have a load frame with a hydraulic actuator (Tension: 241 kN, or 54 kips; Compression: 365 kN, or 82 kips).

Brief information
Dr. Yi Bao is the Director of the Smart Infrastructure Laboratory and an Assistant Professor in Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering. Before joining in Stevens Institute of Technology, Dr. Bao was a Postdoc at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a Guest Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Dr. Bao is dedicated to developing resilient and sustainable infrastructure through innovations in structural design, sensors, materials, and intelligent algorithms for engineering structures. He has authored more than 140 journals papers.
