Commuter Student Services and Support

There are many resources available to our commuter students as they make the adjustment to life at Stevens. The Commuter Student Association is an active student organization that represents the interests of commuting students, helps orient new commuters, arranges social activities and makes sure commuters are represented in all aspects of student life. For commuters who opt to use public transportation, the Hoboken Terminal is well-served by NJ Transit trains and buses, the PATH train and NY Waterway. NJ Transit offers discounts for commuter students. For more information, visit stevens.edu/visit/public-transportation. Commuter students have access to on-campus lockers and lounge spaces throughout campus. Many commuter students choose to purchase a Stevens meal plan through the housing and dining portal on myStevens.

The Stevens Shuttle is a shared shuttle ride that arrives when you want, where you want (at campus sites and select sites in Hoboken). Book rides straight from your phone, get picked up in minutes and never worry about making it to class or work on time. Due to high demand, make sure to book your ride in advance of when you need to be picked up. The Stevens Shuttle app is available for download in Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Learn more at stevens.edu/transportation-and-parking/stevens-shuttle.

Parking

Stevens is in the City of Hoboken, a walkable, urban center that is one mile square and has many options for public transportation and ride shares (including the Stevens Shuttle). Students are encouraged to commute to campus by foot, bicycle, public transit or carpool, in lieu of driving alone. Student parking at Stevens is restricted to commuter students who reside outside of Hoboken, students with disabilities related to mobility, students participating in co-op positions that are inaccessible by public transportation and qualifying AFROTC/ROTC students. Semester and daily permits are available on myStevens for eligible students.

Safety

Stevens has been recognized as the safest campus in New Jersey and one of the safest colleges in the nation. The safety and welfare of our students are a top priority, and Stevens helps to ensure this with a tight-knit community and strong team effort. Safety measures on campus include an accessible and skilled Campus Police team, a broad security camera system, a safe ride system through the Stevens Shuttle, student training and education, an Emergency Management Team and an emergency text and email alert system. Information regarding signing up for the emergency text alert system will be shared with students closer to their arrival on campus.

Campus Emergencies

To report a Stevens-related emergency, please call Stevens Campus Police at 201-216-3911 (Emergency Line, 24/7) or 201-216-5105 (Non-Emergency Line, 24/7). All students should program the main Campus Police number (201-216-5105) into their cell phone.

Stevens Guardian

Stevens Guardian is a mobile app that turns any cell phone into a personalized protection network. It connects you directly with Stevens Campus Police during an emergency and provides vital information instantly. Through this app, students can make fast-response panic calls, have police locate you in an emergency through GPS, set safety networks and timers to notify trusted friends of your whereabouts and send anonymous crime tips to Stevens Campus Police. Instructions for downloading the Stevens Guardian app are available online.

Student Health Services offers various testing and is a Lab Corp draw site. Students can receive prescriptions for routine medications. Students can be seen at Health Services by appointment only Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an on-call nurse available to speak with students 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, accessible through the main phone line. Student Health Services offers appointments in-person and via telehealth; all appointments can be made online through the Healthy Stevens portal.

Counseling and Psychological Services

Stevens offers free and confidential counseling through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to all enrolled students who are struggling to cope with personal issues (e.g., difficulty adjusting to college or trouble managing stress) or psychological difficulties (e.g., anxiety and depression). CAPS staff delivers treatment in many ways, including short-term individual treatment and group therapy. CAPS also offers crisis services for students in urgent need of support. In circumstances where a student requires long-term or specialized treatment, CAPS will provide referrals to outside clinicians in the local community. Additionally, CAPS offers consultations to staff, faculty and students who are concerned about a student or peer. CAPS also offers workshops and training seminars for the entire campus, covering topics that include suicide prevention, conflict resolution and anxiety management. All CAPS clinicians are licensed or supervised by a licensed professional. Appointments can be made by calling 201-216-5177 or online through the Healthy Stevens portal. Note that crisis visits cannot be scheduled online. In case of a mental health crisis, help is always available and can be reached by calling 201-216-5177 (after hours and weekends, press “2” to be connected with a live counselor). For all other questions please email [email protected].

Disability Services

To receive services and accommodations for a disability, students must formally register with the Office of Disability Services (ODS). To register with the Office of Disability Services, the student must submit appropriate documentation. Documentation should contain a diagnosis of the specific disability from a qualified professional and provide rationale for the requested accommodations. In addition to utilizing accommodations, students registered in the ODS can benefit from setting up a weekly meeting with the ODS to discuss student progress (whether academic or social), time management or review study skills. To learn more, email the office at [email protected]

CARE Team

The Campus Awareness and Response Education (CARE) Team is a dedicated group of Stevens professionals who manage student crisis situations. The team focuses on raising the awareness of the community when a student is in crisis or distress, educating the community on the appropriate action to take when faced with a crisis, and responding in a way that preserves the safety of the community and provides maximum support for the student. The CARE Team meets regularly and responds to reports and students in need while providing outreach to relevant campus offices and contacts to gather information and address concerns. The CARE Team utilizes community resources, when appropriate, to assist students. A CARE Team Report can be submitted online by any individual concerned about a Stevens student.
