The Trustees of the Stevens Institute of Technology (commonly known as Stevens Institute of Technology) was created as an educational institution by Act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1870.

Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)

Stevens Institute of Technology has been continually accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1927. Stevens is accredited until 2027 and the next self-study evaluation is scheduled to take place during 2026-2027.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation. It is a unit of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools that accredits degree-granting colleges and universities in the Middle States region, which includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and several locations internationally. The Commission is a voluntary, non-governmental, membership association that defines, maintains and promotes educational excellence across institutions with diverse missions, student populations and resources. It examines each institution as a whole, rather than specific programs within institutions.

ABET Accreditation of Engineering and Computer Science Programs

ABET, Inc., serves the public through the promotion and advancement of education in applied science, computing, engineering and technology. ABET will:

• Accredit educational programs.

• Promote quality and innovation in education.

• Consult and assist in the development and advancement of education worldwide in a financially self-sustaining manner.

• Communicate with our constituencies and the public regarding activities and accomplishments.

• Anticipate and prepare for the changing environment and the future needs of constituencies.

ABET was founded in 1932 as the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), an engineering professional body dedicated to the education, accreditation, regulation and professional development of the engineering professionals and students in the United States. In 1936, ECPD evaluated its first engineering degree programs and Stevens and Columbia University were the first two programs to receive accreditation. In 1980, ECPD was renamed the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology to more accurately describe its emphasis on accreditation.

American Chemical Society (ACS)

The ACS is a congressionally chartered independent membership organization which represents professionals at all degree levels and in all fields of chemistry and sciences that involve chemistry.

All Stevens’ undergraduate and graduate business programs are accredited by AACSB, placing Stevens among the 5 percent of business schools globally to earn this distinction. AACSB provides internationally recognized, specialized accreditation for business and accounting programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. The AACSB accreditation standards challenge post-secondary educators to pursue excellence and continuous improvement throughout their business programs. AACSB accreditation is known worldwide as the longest-standing, most recognized form of specialized/professional accreditation an institution and its business programs can earn.

Project Management Institute (PMI) Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs

Some Stevens graduate degree programs in project management are accredited by the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs. This accreditation publicly confirms these programs meet comprehensive quality standards within academic degree programs related to project management, and that they can prepare students for success in project management careers.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

In accordance with revised federal regulations regarding professional licensure disclosures (effective July 1, 2020; amended July 1, 2024), institutions must provide notifications for in-person and distance education programs leading to professional licensure as required by 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v) and 34 CFR 668.43(c) for purposes of title IV HEA programs.

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first of two examinations that engineers must pass to be licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States. The second exam is the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. The FE exam is open to anyone with a degree in engineering or related field or currently enrolled in the last year of an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited engineering degree program. The New Jersey licensure board permits students to take the FE prior to their final year. The exam is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure can vary from state to state. To sit for the Uniform CPA exam and apply for licensure, verify your state requirements at National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA). The educational requirement for CPA Licensure is 150 credit-hours for all states.
