Software Engineering Reaches No. 2 in Best College Reviews Ranking of Undergraduate Degrees

Continuing the trend of rising recognition for programs offered by the School of Systems & Enterprises (SSE), the Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering program recently ranked No. 2 nationwide on the Best College Reviews 2022 report of software engineering undergraduate degrees. SSE’s program distinguished itself from the competition through its unique quality and opportunities, featuring an accelerated master’s degree track, co-op assignments and a comprehensive minor program.

“We are so pleased to see software engineering at Stevens ranking so highly at a national level,” said Assistant Professor Lu Xiao, who teaches courses within the core curriculum. “Our program is designed to stand out through its core of engineering and systems thinking, and we’re happy to be recognized for the value and outcomes of this degree.”

Armed with a strong software and systems foundation, graduates from the program can assume professional positions across a broad range of industries such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing and information systems. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for software developers was $110,140 in 2020.

Led by SSE’s Professor Gregg Vesonder, the software engineering program leverages the School’s roots in systems engineering. Students learn to address complexity in software development and to analyze software as the fundamental component allowing complex systems to optimally function. Concentrations in strategic domains such as cybersecurity, financial systems, healthcare systems and sustainable energy are available for students pursuing particular industries. Co-op work opportunities are also integral to the SSE education, providing real-world experiences to students who emerge as graduates ready to enter the software workforce.

Best College Reviews ranks the top schools and programs to help prospective students make informed decisions when applying. Rankings are determined by data from the U.S. Department of Education and factors such as academic quality, affordability, reputation and earning potential after graduation. Software engineering at SSE excelled in each of these categories.
