On October 26, Dr. Lowell H. Schwartz, Staff Member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will present the inaugural lecture in the College of Arts and Letters Dean's Lecture Series.
The international environment is changing. Once again, nations are competing for power, and the Western World is experiencing a rise in nationalist populism. Dr. Schwartz will discuss how U.S. national security objectives and foreign policy are adapting to recent global developments.

Compassionate Men and Angry Women: Examining the Effects of Emotionality on Perceptions of Politicians

Elected officials face the same public policy demands no matter their gender, but how politicians communicate their positions is oftentimes impacted by gendered perceptions from their audiences. For example, a male legislator can act differently when negotiating about defense policy than he can when doing so for education policy. Using a survey experiment on a diverse national sample, Lindsey Cormack and Kristyn Karl will pinpoint when each gender pays a penalty or gains reward for specific emotional appeals.
