ABSTRACT
This presentation serves as an example of a Sustainability Management capstone project. While we will primarily discuss our capstone project deliverables and work breakdown, the panel will also be happy to answer any questions regarding time management, client (external partner) meetings, or presentations to update the class on work completed.
PROJECT ABSTRACT (A) - CSRD Readiness for Hilton Worldwide
The European Union (EU) has set forth a series of regulations known as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). These regulations are the first of their kind in scope and scale on the planet. This action from the EU represents a major turning point in the global history of sustainability reporting. The new laws cover companies owned and operated in the EU, as well as foreign companies with significant business presence in the EU. The reporting guidelines will mandate corporations to report on qualitative and quantitative data regarding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. This project will focus on the steps necessary for companies to prepare for this new reporting framework by following an American company, Hilton Worldwide on its CSRD readiness approach.
PROJECT ABSTRACT (B) - New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA): Striving for ISI Envision Verification
As New York City aims to improve its transit system and provide quality service at a reasonable price, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) is focusing on becoming more sustainable. The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) offers its highly touted Envision verification to infrastructure projects that prove their ability to positively impact the quality of life, leadership, resource allocation, climate resilience, and the natural world of their communities. By reviewing achieving transit projects at all levels of verification, from general verification to “platinum”, this project worked to gather information on the envision criteria that are best applicable to transit. With an understanding of criteria that have proven to be applicable to differing types of transit solutions across the country, and insight on the MTA’s current and future project plans, this research outlines pertinent Envision criteria for the Authority to focus on. When looking to embed sustainability throughout project lifecycles, from early-stage planning through to construction and operations, this study outlines a series of goals and objectives to guide that integration in a way that is both impactful and tailored to New York City.
BIOGRAPHY
Stephen Crocco recently received a Master of Science in Sustainability Management at Stevens after completing his Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, also from Stevens. Stephen is a water engineer at TYLin in Manhattan and is working on wastewater resource facility improvement projects, as well as water management programs for various cities in the US. Stephen also has a high level of interest in public transit and in sustainability award framework, especially Envision as it can be applied to any piece of infrastructure.
Caden Stott recently received a Master of Science in Sustainability Management at Stevens after completing his Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, also at Stevens. Caden currently works with Tetra Tech in New York City and has been with the company for two and a half years. The work at Tetra Tech includes researching climate action strategies and pollution reduction goals for EPA Community Grants, creating and reviewing bid packages for lead service line replacements in New Jersey, and designing construction plans in Civil 3D.
