Arrival on Campus
Residential Student Move-In
Move-in takes place on August 21 for Pre-Orientation participants and International students, and on August 24 for all new students. Student-athletes in-season in the fall arrive early on August 15. The Office of Residential and Dining Services will contact all residential students in late July to communicate an assigned arrival time on your scheduled move-in day. If you travel to campus by car, please plan to bring only one car. Each student may bring guests to help with move-in; however, we recommend keeping them to a maximum of three if possible. When you arrive, you will be greeted by many excited students, staff and faculty who will provide you with the information you need to get to your room and begin unpacking. On-campus parking is available for one car per student on your move-in day.
Arriving on Your Move-In Day and Time
All new undergraduate students will check-in in front of Martha Bayard Stevens Hall (next to Humphreys Hall) during their scheduled move-in appointment time. Students are asked to bring one car to campus for move-in. Cars should arrive at the 9th Street entrance to campus at the student’s move-in appointment time. Cars will line up down 9th Street — please expect a short wait at the front gate as each car is checked in. Students may bring a guest (or a few guests) to help with the move-in process, but please be mindful that the rooms are not large enough to accommodate big groups of people and that parking is limited. Having two guests to assist is an ideal number. Cars will be directed to let the student out to walk over to the tent check-in while the other individuals in the car drive to the assigned residence hall. When students arrive at check-in they will receive a room key, Orientation information and a welcome bag. Please note that students will only be issued room keys if they have submitted documentation for all required vaccinations (unless approved for an exemption in advance) prior to arrival. After checking in, students will walk over to their residence hall and meet their guests. Stevens’ Unpack the Quack volunteers will remove all student belongings from the car and bring them up to the room while at least one person (the student or a guest) remains with the car. After your car is unpacked, you will be directed to a campus lot to park your car for the duration of the visit.
Family and Guest Departure Times
On Thursday, August 21, lunch will be served to students and families following move-in, and then the Pre-Orientation begins at 1 p.m. We are hosting a Parent & Family event at 1 p.m. after which families should prepare to leave campus (your student will already be engaged in Pre-Orientation at that time). On Sunday, August 24, a picnic lunch will be served to students and families following your move-in time; students and families may drop in anytime during the move-in process to eat. We are hosting Parent & Family programs at 3 p.m. that day, after which families should prepare to leave campus. The formal New Student Orientation program begins at 3 p.m. We ask that parents and families leave campus by 5 p.m. on August 24.
Parking on Move-In Days
Parking for one car per student will be available on campus at no charge on the assigned move-in day. Students and families will be directed to move their car to a designated campus parking lot after unloading their belongings.
Labeling Your Belongings
It is each student’s responsibility to label all boxes, bins, luggage and other belongings that you will have when you arrive for move-in. This will avoid lost items as many students are arriving in a short period of time.
Commuter Information Students who commute to campus should plan to first arrive on campus to check-in on either August 21 (for those participating in Pre-Orientation programs) or August 24 (for all other new students). A specific arrival time will be communicated to you in August. Commuter students participate in all aspects of New Student Orientation and should plan to remain on campus for events all day and late into the evening during the Orientation period. During Orientation, commuter students will learn about parking, student discounts for NJ Transit, campus resources, spaces for commuter students and the Commuter Student Association.
Residence Hall Staff The Office of Residential Education has an amazing team of staff to support residential students during your time at Stevens, including our professional Resident Directors, Assistant Directors and Director. Your first point of contact will be your Resident Assistant, or RA. Your RA is a returning Stevens student who is available on your floor to connect with you, to provide academic and social support and resources, to confront and manage any incidents you may encounter and to develop a friendly community on your floor and in your hall. Your RA will reach out to you later in the summer to say hello and offer an introduction.
Making New Connections If you are nervous about meeting new people, remember that your new classmates are in the same situation as you are. They don't know anyone either and they want as much as you do to find people to share the adventure with. Be friendly and open, attend all Orientation sessions, participate in programs and events, and introduce yourself to new faces. Join student groups that appeal to you and meet people who share your interests. Remember that college is the ultimate learning experience where you discover tons about getting along with other people and understanding and celebrating differences. Try to be open to new experiences and people.
