The 40-hour two week full immersion program is part of a joint initiative of Stevens Institute of Technology and the University of Naples Federico II (UNINA). 

The program aims to improve student preparedness to work in a global and open economy through internationalization of their curricula, and to strengthen student exchange, diversification and collaboration.

The program aims to provide participants with an introduction to the main challenges involved in the setup of new engineering ventures by:

  • Developing an understanding of companies and organizations as entrepreneurial and as systems for innovation
  • Identifying the right business model, innovation opportunities, target industry and market
  • Understanding the economics and elaborating the financials of a new venture
  • Presenting business data to investors in clear and concise manner

This unique program will be hosted by the University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy. UNINA has a rich history being the 1st public university in the world founded in 1224 by Emperor Federico. The two week program will focus on the five main themes:

  • Introduction to Entrepreneurship
  • Industry Analysis and Market Research
  • Intellectual Property
  • Data Analysis, Presentation and Visualization
  • Economics of Startups and Costs

Course Description

  • 2 weeks full immersion; total number of hours: 40 (including lectures, invited speeches, labs and two half days company visits)
  • Stevens students can earn 3 credits towards their degree as the course is equivalent to E 356
  • The course is taught at the University of Naples Federico II, School of Engineering, Piazzale Tecchio 80, 80125 Naples (Italy)
  • Taught in English by Stevens Professors and international guest speakers

Enrollment Procedure

Students have to enroll for the spring semester as usual, indicating the Italian class as one of the classes they would be taking. This class in Italy is the course equivalent to E 356

Why students should consider attending this course:

  • Get Stevens course credit while traveling abroad
  • Lighten your credit load by traveling to Europe in May to take a class
  • The course in Italy is included in the cost of your spring tuition. You only pay for travel and associated accommodations

Study abroad has obvious benefits such as providing understanding and appreciation for other cultures and perspectives. New frames of reference allow those who study abroad to compare and contrast their own education, professional goals and socio-cultural values with those of their host country. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

Opinion leaders, policy makers and practitioners consider studying abroad as critical and distinctive in the education of engineers and employers look favorably on students who have study abroad experience:

  • The National Academy of Engineering on Educating the Engineer[1] of 2020 calls for tomorrow’s engineers to be able to live, learn, and understand other cultures and environments.
  • ABET[2] calls for engineers to have a broad education necessary to understand other cultures and environments.
  • According to Thomas Friedman[3], our world is flat. And this ‘flattening’ of the world is taking place in an ever-quickening pace. In a global economy borders are not barriers; where knowledge about another culture or foreign environment is very much an asset from the employer’s viewpoint. The globalization of industry and engineering practice is upon us and as educators we must assist our students in providing them a global understanding. Study abroad is one method to this end.
  • Ann Stock, Assistant Secretary of State for educational and cultural affairs said, “For American students to be competitive in today’s globalized world, international experience is critically important”[4].
