The Biotechnology and Drug Discovery Laboratory at the Center for Healthcare Innovation is a research and training facility established in part from with a generous donation of equipment and supplies from Roche and Merck and support from the New Jersey Department of Labor.
The laboratory’s mission is to partner with Stevens faculty, students and external academic and industry collaborators who require the expertise of the laboratory to advance their research. Furthermore, the laboratory explores therapeutic disease targets of interest and identifies model compounds that could be used as structure/activity entry points and scaffold platforms in drug discovery projects.
Eleven scientists with extensive experience in biotechnology and drug discovery — all formerly employed at Roche, Merck and Novartis — have joined Stevens as faculty and research associates to operate this facility. The team includes five individuals with over 150 years of combined R&D experience in pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporate laboratories. This facility provides students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in biotechnology and drug discovery and development. It also provides industry collaborators with a local academic partner for workforce training as well as a research resource for protein structure based and in silico drug screening and discovery, assay development and robotic drug screening as well as preclinical gene cloning and purification of therapeutic proteins.
The CHI Biotechnology and Drug Discovery Laboratory nurtures entrepreneurship, contributes to maintaining New Jersey as a pharmaceutical and biotechnology hub and positions Stevens as a premier university and industry partner for biotechnology and drug discovery.
