Women as full profs

Tue, 02/14/2012 - 09:21 -- dvaccari

At yesterday's strategic planning town hall, a comment was made that the plans should include the role of women. I agree that this is important to create an atmosphere of inclusion and to provide role models for our women students.
The same commenter also made a criticism of the number of full profs at Stevens.
I suggest that this is not a good measure of inclusion of women today.
The distribution of full profs will depend upon hiring decisions made decades ago.
What would be relevant would be the proportion of women (and minorities) that apply for promotion who are successful in their application, compared to the similar proportion for men.
This could be applied to promotion decisions at all ranks, in tenure decisions, and in hiring decsions as well.
Having said that, I would hope and expect to see women to have higher success rates, particularly at the hiring level.
This is because, given the history of discrimination and the low numbers on the faculty, women (again, and minorities) should be given preference, other things being equal.
