Living and Learning Communities

Stevens’ Living Learning Communities bring together students who share the same identities, passions, or interests. 

The Office of Residential Education is excited to offer 6 living-learning communities to the Stevens residential experience!  In addition to the Lore-El Center for Women, there are 5 first-year living-learning communities: First Generation Scholars, or 1GS, Women in Math, Science, and Engineering, or WiMSE, The Arts, Service & Leadership, and Scholars House.

Applying a for Living Learning Community 

Please note that the application process for living-learning communities is a separate part of the standard housing application. What is a Living Learning Community?

A Living Learning Community, or LLC, is a Residential Education initiative designed to support the academic, social, and personal needs of Stevens students as they pursue their academic goals.  Students living in an LLC have the opportunity to engage in academic experiences with their peers, interact with faculty and staff, and enjoy the benefits of being a part of a diverse community with common scholarly and social interests and identities.  

Each living-learning community is a collaboration between students, faculty, and staff from across campus focused on engaging the student participants in programs and events that enhance their Stevens experience.  Students will be a part of a close-knit community that supports academic success, cultivates an inclusive and supportive environment, fosters personal growth and social responsibility, and develops leaders and global citizens during their time at Stevens and beyond.

The Lore-El Center for Women's Leadership

The Lore-El Center for Women's Leadership

Located at 802 Castle Point Terrace, the Lore-El Center for Leadership living-learning community (LLC) provides the opportunity for upperclassmen, female identifying and non-binary students to live together in a supportive residential community. Members of Lore-El benefit from interactions with peers facing similar opportunities and challenges, academically, socially, and professionally. Lore-El offers its residents faculty interaction, academic support, and an inclusive, welcoming community with other students in STEM. 

First Gen Scholars

First Generation Scholars

The First Gen Scholars (1GS) living-learning community in Humphreys Hall provides a residential experience designed to support first year, first generation college students, in partnership with faculty, staff, and peers to navigate through the academic and social transition to Stevens.   The 1GS LLC provides a unique opportunity for first generation college students to connect on a deeper level with their peers to promote academic success, increase campus involvement, and develop an enhanced sense of belonging.  

Women in STEM

Women in Math, Science, and Engineering

The Women in Math, Science, and Engineering (WiMSE) living-learning community in Davis Hall provides the opportunity for first-year, female-identifying and non-binary students to live together in a supportive residential community.  Members of WiMSE benefit from interactions with peers facing similar opportunities and challenges, academically, socially, and professionally.  WiMSE offers its residents faculty interaction, academic support, and an inclusive, welcoming community with other students in STEM.

The Arts

The Arts living-learning community, which will be located in Humphreys Hall, will bring together students with a shared interest or skill in the arts, such as music, theater, dance, visual art, and design. In The Arts LLC, residents will share a spirit of creativity and collaboration while forming informal musical groups or organizing efforts to showcase the community's talents. The Arts LLC residents will attend on-campus performances and exhibits as well as fine and performing art events and workshops in New York City and in the local area.

Classroom Service

Service & Leadership

The Service and Leadership living-learning community, which will be located in Castle Point Hall, will serve as a home for students who are committed to and passionate about civic engagement and cultivating a more just society. Students living in the Service and Leadership LLC will deepen their understanding of social issues, learn to think critically about leadership, and participate in community service projects. In partnership with faculty and staff, the Service and Leadership LLC residents will work together to build relationships and develop a community that fosters a sense of belonging and empowers the possibility to make collective change.

Pinnacle Scholars Classroom 2017

Scholars House

The Scholars House, which will be located in Jonas Hall, will provide a space for Pinnacle Scholars to live and learn together. Supporting the goal of the existing program, the Scholars House will continue the traditions of peer mentorship, the cultural passport that allows students to experience vibrant cultural opportunities, as well as the development of a strong sense of community with their peers. The Scholars House will more closely link the highly regarded program and its individualized approach to advisement and connection with faculty with an intentionally designed residential experience to provide a rewarding academic and co-curricular experience.
