Tej Patel Named Stevens’ Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer

In his new role, Patel will formulate a unifying IT vision and strategy aligned with Stevens overarching mission

(Hoboken, N.J. – May 29, 2020) – Tej Patel, a forward-looking leader with more than 15 years of higher education and corporate information technology experience, has been selected as Stevens Institute of Technology’s next vice president for information technology and chief information officer, effective Aug. 17, 2020.

Patel comes to Stevens from the University of Pennsylvania, where he held several positions including chief information officer at the School of Nursing and IT director of systems and infrastructure service at the Annenberg School for Communications. In his role as IT director, he directed all aspects of the school’s state-of-the-art IT infrastructure and services, two data centers, security, and application development for over 500 faculty, staff, and students.

As Penn Nursing’s chief information officer, his many accomplishments included creating a vision and implementing its components; judiciously managing multiple IT budgets; and leading a team that provided consistent, relevant, and quality IT services. Among the many systems and services under his technology leadership were hybrid cloud, networks design and security, research computing environments, data services, web applications, simulation center, online learning technologies, and digital classroom design.

“Patel is deeply invested in building and leading IT organizations that are focused on innovation and delivering enhanced services through data-driven decisions,” said Stevens President Nariman Farvardin. “His experience includes building high performing teams with strong technical and digital product management skills; extensive understanding of information services, academic research, and online learning; and establishing collaborative partnerships to enhance an IT department’s reputation and the services it provides.”

At the University of Pennsylvania, Patel advanced the goals of the university’s strategic plan by aligning it with the IT strategic plan, which included supporting device-independence and mobility, managing data as an enterprise resource, supporting connected learning and global initiatives, and building and managing an effective hybrid environment that best utilized local, central, and cloud-based services.

Throughout his career, Patel has instilled confidence in IT services by sustaining a robust technology infrastructure and by protecting the university’s data and information assets. He also advised on strategic investments and integrated technologies that best supported advancements in learning, research, and practice. He cultivated partnerships within the university as well as with peer schools, vendors, healthcare institutions, and funding agencies to leverage knowledge and investments, and maximize partnership opportunities.

“I’m honored and incredibly excited to join the Stevens Institute of Technology family and grateful to have the opportunity to represent the exceptionally talented technology team at Stevens,” said Patel. “I look forward to working collaboratively with the colleagues across campus, President Nariman, the leadership team, board of trustees, deans, alumni, faculty, staff and students. Together, with a ‘Technology at our core’ mindset, we will provide user-centric enterprise services that enable operational excellence and academic innovation in learning, teaching, and research at Stevens.”

Patel earned a bachelor of science in business administration with a concentration in management information systems from Montclair State University and is a candidate for a master of science in organizational dynamics at the University of Pennsylvania.
