It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Stevens seniors – and not only because of the excitement of the holiday season and the anticipation of entering their last semester of college.
This is the time of year when the list of graduating seniors who have accepted full-time job offers begins to grow. The Office of Career Development reports that to-date, 25% of students have secured jobs for after graduation. Year after year, many seniors at Stevens are in the enviable position of going into their final semester with the challenge of their first job hunt already behind them.
Some Stevens students, like Zoe Elliott, are able to parlay their internship experience into a career. Zoe, a Civil Engineering major, held two internships during her Stevens career: the first at Maser Consulting in Red Bank, NJ, in the water/wastewater division and the second at ExxonMobil Research & Engineering in Fairfax, VA, in the project execution planning and contracts section.
“It was advantageous having summer internships that focused on different areas of civil engineering,” Zoe says. “It gave me the opportunity to see what direction of civil engineering I wanted to pursue.”
After graduation, Zoe will be a part of the Project Management team of the Cost & Scheduling division of ExxonMobil Research & Engineering. Her internship experience at the company allowed her to get a feel for both the culture of the organization and the type of work she wanted to continue doing, so when they offered her a full-time position early this fall, she readily accepted. In her new role she will learn about ExxonMobil’s capital project planning, design, and execution services at the Virginia office and will have the opportunity to travel domestically and internationally to project sites.
Zoe, who is very active on campus, credits the broad-based Stevens education and the Office of Career Development with preparing her for the job search and her future career:
“At Stevens, I learned more than what was in my textbooks – I learned how to think, problem-solve, and be innovative in approaching a challenge,” she explains. “The Office of Career Development was a critical resource for me. They were invaluable in their support, knowledge, and patience as I searched for internships and full-time positions.”
In the future, Zoe plans to obtain her Professional Engineer’s (PE) license and become involved with and give back to the local American Society of Civil Engineers chapter as well as theSociety of Women Engineers. She is interested in green engineering and sustainability and would like to incorporate green practices into both construction and operation of projects throughout her career.
