The Stevens men’s and women’s swimming programs were recently honored as Scholar All-America teams by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). It is the 10th-straight honor for the women and eighth for the women who are both ranked in the top-20 of the latest CSCAA Division III poll.
The men’s team has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.14 and was one of 76 teams honored. The Stevens women maintain a GPA of 3.13 and were one of just 26 squads recognized by the collegiate swimming governing body.
“I am proud of the young men and women on the team,” head coach Trevor Miele said. “Every year I am amazed to see how well they do in the classroom. To have those kind of results when you factor in the amount of time they spend in the pool and weight room training is really special. It’s a remarkable achievement to be nationally ranked based on performance in the pool and in the classroom.”
Four members of the men’s swimming team will be honored Wednesday night as members of the Stevens President’s List for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.75 or better – sophomore Henry Hernandez, junior John Hu, sophomore Joe Huyett and junior Derek Smith. Three members of the women’s squad are on the list in junior Erin Hopson, freshman Julie Kamperman and sophomore Louise Moores.
Both teams placed second at last week’s Empire 8 Championships and now have sizable groups preparing for the 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Conference (NCAA) Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. scheduled for March 21-24. The official psych sheets for that event will be released in early March.
The Scholar All-America team award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. The College Swimming Coaches Association is the oldest coaches organization in America. In addition to Scholar All-America awards, the CSCAA recognizes All-American Swimmers and Divers at the NCAA’s every year.
