Patti Ruskan, an Associate Principal in the Civil Engineering department at Paulus, Sokolowski (PS&S) and Sartor, LLC, was recognized by Stevens as one of this year’s Cooperative Education Supervisors of the Year.
Each year, Stevens Co-op students are invited to nominate supervisors they believe have gone above and beyond the call of duty for consideration as Co-op Supervisor of the Year. The individuals nominated are more than just supervisors; they have become mentors and are personally invested in the professional development of the students they are supervising. All nominations go through a thorough vetting and deliberation process until award recipients are determined.
This year, Ruskan was nominated by a student who has performed two Co-op work assignments at PS&S under her supervision and leadership.
“I was so surprised and flattered when I heard that one of our Co-op students had nominated me," said Ruskan. "The Stevens program provides so many benefits for the students, from hands-on learning with real life projects to interacting with engineers daily in an office environment. Students are paid and treated as professionals to help them develop confidence in their abilities and in themselves. For us, being able to teach and share all we’ve learned with student engineers is reward enough, knowing that our knowledge is being passed forward."
“On a more personal level, this program has taken me back to when I was just starting out in my career, and how eager I was to learn and how thankful I am that I had a mentor to guide me," she added. "It’s very satisfying to know that I have passed forward what I learned from my mentor in helping the next generation of civil engineers in their careers."
Ruskan joined PS&S in 1989, was named Senior Associate in 1999 and Associate Principal in 2006. As an Associate Principal and Project Manager within the Civil Engineering Department, she is responsible for all aspects of project development from client contact, through final design and agency approval, public representation and construction administration.
Founded in 1962, PS&S has evolved into a unique AE firm, providing design and permitting services to a wide range of corporate, institutional and commercial clients.
