The Stevens Institute of Technology Doctoral Award recognizes promising Research in Systems Engineering and Integration. The award was initiated by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) in 2002 and sponsored by Stevens as a means to inspire and recognize innovative doctoral-level research related to the field of systems engineering and integration. It was the first such award for doctoral students in the history of INCOSE.
“This award is a manifestation of our focus on the continued evolution of the discipline of systems engineering through research and our commitment to INCOSE as a platform for systems engineering – worldwide,” says Dean of the School of Systems and Enterprises, Dinesh Verma.
This award provides a $5,000 grant to a doctoral student along with a plaque and recognition and is presented yearly at the Annual INCOSE Symposium. INCOSE is currently accepting applications for the 2013 Award and expects, as in years past, that they will receive dozens of applications for the grant.
“We are proud of the legacy that we have been able to build with Stevens,” said John Snoderly, Chair, INCOSE Foundation. “The Stevens Doctoral award allows us to bring the innovative research of future leaders from around the world to the forefront of the systems engineering discipline.”
Last year’s Doctoral Award winner, Clement Smartt, previously worked as a Principal Systems Engineer with L-3 Communications and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree, with a focus on systems engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington.
“Each year the process of reviewing and selecting the winner of the doctoral award becomes more challenging,” says Chairman Snoderly, “the caliber of candidates who apply and the innovative research in which they are engaged is truly a testament to the great work that institutions that offer systems engineering programs around the world are doing.”
Previous recipients of the award have hailed from institutions across the world among them: University of British Columbia (2011), Missouri University of Science and Technology (2010), University of Aveiro, Portugal (2009), the Missouri University of Science and Technology (2008) and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquees de Toulouse (also in 2008), University of Southern California (2007), the Southern Methodist University (2006), University of Pennsylvania (2005), Stanford University (2004), Stevens Institute (2003), and Leeds in the UK (2002).
“We hope that this award and more important, the associated recognition from recognized thought leaders within the discipline will propel future systems engineering thought leaders,” said Dean Verma.

Ph.D candidates who apply for the doctoral award must be able to show how their research will advance or have the potential to impact the state-of-the-knowledge in systems engineering and integration within the next 5 to 10 years.
