For two weeks each summer, the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology becomes a police academy-style boot camp for 40 Hoboken youngsters ages 12 to 15. The Hoboken Junior Police Academy program, now underway on the Stevens campus, is free for students and funded and sponsored by the Hoboken Drug Municipal Alliance.
Stevens’ campus—with its gyms, large outdoor spaces, marching grounds, classrooms and auditorium -- provides an ideal setting for the program, and students enjoy both challenging physical activities and a sense of the college experience.
Among the activities on the students’ agenda:
A visit to a real police academy where they get to experience drill sergeants, driving simulators, and gun simulators.
Presentations from New Jersey State Police swat teams.
Presentations from FBI agents
Certification in CPR by the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps
Participation in a mock trial run by the Hudson County Prosecutors office
Physical and self-defense training
The sight of a State Police Aviation Unit helicopter landing and taking off from Pier A
Forensics work, as they examine mock crime scenes and search for clues
"It can be trying at times, because we do make them do pushups and physical activity,” said Hoboken Police Officer Dan Simone III, who runs the program. “We try to instill discipline in them. They enjoy it because we do incorporate a lot of unique experiences. At the end of the program the students march in National Night Out’s Day Against Crime, from City Hall to Church Square Park while displaying the skills they’ve learned in a drilling ceremony.”
Said Campus Police Chief Tim Griffin, “The program teaches students how to deal with life and to be a person who solves problems instead of causing them. It is an investment in the youth of Hoboken, and it is one of many ways that Stevens partners with and gives back to the community.”
