Rochester, NY - by Jon McCue
Javelin thrower Maggie Kowalska of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's outdoor track and field team was named the Empire 8's Rookie of the Year on Tuesday morning. Kowalska was the first Stevens athlete to qualify for nationals in school history, finished first or second in javelin in every meet in which she competed during the regular season, and won the conference title at the 2010 Empire 8 Championships.
Kowalska holds the school record in the javelin at 41.58 meters (136'5"), and finished 17th in the country in the event. Among freshmen, she placed second at the NCAA meet.
Kowalska also competed in the high jump this season for the Ducks.
It was a remarkable year for the Stevens women's outdoor track and field team, who earned their first pair of NCAA participants, set 11 new school records this season (lowering them a combined total of 42 times over the winter and spring seasons), had four Empire 8 champions and five all-conference selections.
