Hoboken, NJ – Dr. Ali Mostashari, Director of the Infrastructure Systems Program and the Director of Center for Complex Adaptive Sociotechnological Systems (COMPASS) at Stevens Institute of Technology, is a co-editor on a new book that will be released in December.
The first book of its kind on sociotechnical networks, Socio-Technical Networks: Science and Engineering Design, will be released on December 8, 2010. It will be available for sale on CRC Press (Taylor and Francis), Amazon.com, Taylorandfrancis.com, and Borders.com.
The term “sociotechnical systems” is generally used for systems where human beings and organizations interact with technology. They constitute a dynamic networked entity comprised of interdependent and interacting social/institutional and physical/technological nodes and links, characterized by inputs, processes/actions and outputs/products.
While there are some sporadic journal articles on socio-technical networks (STN), there was a need for a comprehensive reference on the subject bringing together the systemic, social and network aspects of STNs. Sociotechnical Networks: Science and Engineering Design provides a complete introduction to the fundamentals of socio-technical networks, including its definition, historical background, and significance. The authors provide basic network architecture from the OSI model perspective and address some challenging design issues. The text also covers all major network protocol design in a typical STN and the application of wireless networks such as sensor networks, WiMAX, etc. in STN access. The book presents STN case studies from healthcare, virtual communities.
Other Co-editors of the book include Dr. Fei Hu, an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama and Dr. Jiang (Linda) Xie, an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
“This is the first comprehensive reference on sociotechnical networks bringing together its systemic, network, technical and social aspects within one volume,” explains Dr. Mostashari, who also serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens, where he teaches courses in Systems Engineering Research Methods, Infrastructure Systems and Dynamic Modeling of Systems and Enterprises.
Dr. Mostashari's scholarly interests include complex sociotechnological systems such as the cognitive/smart power grid, transportation and energy infrastructure systems and complex social/organizational systems. During his time at Stevens, Dr. Mostashari has served as a Principal and co-Principal investigator on major research grants related to port infrastructure resilience, cognitive enterprises and agile systems engineering concept of operations.
