Hoboken, N.J.– A paper led by professors at Stevens Institute of Technology examining the multiresponsiveness of clay-containing films to multiple stimuli will be highlighted in the November 22 issue of ACS Nano, a leading scientific journal from the American Chemical Society.
Dr. Svetlana Sukhishvili, Chemistry professor and co-director of the Nanotechnology graduate program at Stevens, was the lead researcher in the study along with her colleagues in the Chemistry, Chemical Biology and Biomedical Engineering Department, a Ph.D. student Aliaksandr Zhuk and an undergraduate student Robert Mirza.
The Stevens team combined clay nanoparticles with polymers within thin films using layer-by-layer technique and observed the response of the materials under varying conditions of temperature, pH and salt. The team demonstrated that clay-containing films can be advantageously used to control diffusion of molecules by external stimuli. The multiresponse features of these films make them promising candidates for applications in sensing, actuation and controlled delivery.
“Innovation comes from a continued commitment to improve upon products and processes by finding ways to increase materials functionality, mechanical properties while improving the environment,” said Dr. Sukhishvili. “Using clay nanoparticles – which are abundant and inexpensive - with polymers creates a versatile material that is environmentally friendly for use in many applications. Importantly, these materials are highly functional, like traditional clay-free polymer gels, yet much more mechanically robust when compared to polymer gels.”
