Deans' Seminar Series: American Bureau of Shipping CEO

The Deans' Seminar Series on Nov. 14, 2013 at 4 p.m. in Babbio Auditorium will feature Christopher J. Wiernicki, chairman and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). His lecture, entiled "Technology Transforms Today's Frontiers into Tomorrow's Front Lines," will discuss challenges and opportunities to find, extract and efficiently use the world’s energy resources in a safe and environmentally sensitive manner. 

ABSTRACT: Christopher J. Wiernicki, an internationally recognized business leader and naval architect, will draw from his experiences to discuss challenges and opportunities to find, extract and efficiently use the world’s energy resources in a safe and environmentally sensitive manner. With more sources of energy coming from harsh and extreme conditions, including the ice infested Arctic regions or even 12,000 feet below sea off the coast of Africa, Mr. Wiernicki will explore opportunities for designers and operators to identify and adapt to this new risk frontier, solve for challenges and embrace novel concepts that go beyond existing empirical knowledge and experience.

BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Christopher J. Wiernicki currently serves as Chairman and CEO of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), one of the largest and most respected international classification societies, and Chairman of ABS Group, a global leader in risk consulting services. Combined, these organizations employ 5,500 professionals in 70 countries. Wiernicki has been a leading voice on a number of issues impacting the marine and offshore industry, including modernizing maritime safety through the use of risk-based methodologies. His approach to management is to use his understanding of engineering, technology, and business fundamentals to stimulate growth and increase stakeholder value. Other leadership positions held in ABS and ABS Group include President and COO of ABS, President and COO of ABS Group, and Chief Technology Officer of ABS. Prior to joining ABS, Wiernicki was President and CEO of Designers and Planners Inc., a leading US naval architecture firm. Wiernicki holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt (1980), a MS in Structural Engineering from George Washington University (1983), and a MS in Ocean Engineering from MIT (1985). He is also a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.
