Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education and Girl Scouts Host 100 Years of Science at Stevens Institute of Technology
Event to Teach Scouts about Renewable Energy and Engineering
Hoboken, N.J. – The Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens Institute of Technology is partnering with three New Jersey Girl Scouts councils to host 100 Years of Science, a one-day, science and engineering event on the university’s Hoboken, N.J. campus on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.
At the event, middle-school-aged scouts from the Heart of New Jersey, Northern New Jersey, and Central & Southern New Jersey councils will conduct alternative energy experiments and work on green energy projects with the help of adult volunteers from each of the councils and student volunteers from the Stevens Society of Women Engineers (SWE). By engaging in hands-on design activities for solar and wind energy production, the girls will gain exposure to the rapidly-growing renewable energy industry.
“100 Years of Science is designed to catalyze girls’ interest and achievement in science and engineering and to foster career awareness in the field,” said Mercedes McKay, deputy director of CIESE.
CIESE, a pioneer and national leader in K-12 engineering education, engages in education programs, curriculum development and research in K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Like SWE, it is committed to attracting girls and other underserved populations to the STEM fields.
