Registration is now open for Alumni Weekend 2013 and several new events have been added to the lineup.
Alumni Weekend, to take place May 31, and June 1 and 2, will feature more events on Friday, May 31, and several new additions to June 1, with many old favorites returning. Classes ending in a “3’’ or “8’’ will celebrate reunion milestone anniversaries, but all classes are encouraged to attend the weekend’s events. The theme of this year’s weekend is “Return, Reunite, Rediscover.’’
New for the Friday schedule, on May 31, will be an Academic Update Luncheon, hosted by the Old Guard Club; a tour of ECOHABIT, the zero-energy Solar Decathlon competition house being built by Stevens students; a Stevens Student Showcase, where students will discuss work in ground-breaking research and new discoveries; and a Hoboken Sampler, where several favorite Hoboken eateries will offer a sampling of their dishes.
The Old Guard, an alumni group featuring classes who graduated from Stevens 50 years ago or more, will host a luncheon on May 31, from noon to 2 p.m. Updates about curriculum at Stevens will be given and all attendees can ask questions. The Old Guard traditionally meets twice a year, and those events are always popular, as alumni get a chance to visit with old friends. While the Old Guard is hosting this kickoff to Alumni Weekend, all alumni, regardless of class year, can attend.
Additions to the Saturday, June 1 calendar include an Athletics Meet & Greet; a Planned Giving Seminar; a Greek Alumni Open House; an Alumni Block Party; a Gear & Triangle Meet & Greet; and a Stevens Technical Enrichment Program (STEP) Meet & Greet. Sunday, June 2, will offer an Alumni Farewell Breakfast as well as the Stevens Ducks 5K Run to benefit the university’s cross-country and track and field programs. The 3.1 mile run along the Stevens campus will start at 9 a.m.
“The activities on Friday will offer alumni the opportunity to truly go back to school,’’ said Nina Rogacki Pepe ’84, chair of the Alumni Weekend Committee. “The Academic Update luncheon will precede the opportunity to review research accomplishments at the Student Showcase. And Saturday promises to be eventful with lots of options for everyone to have a great time.’’
Classes celebrating a special reunion plan to do so in style. The golden anniversary class, the Class of 1963, will enjoy a 50th Reunion dinner cruise along the Hudson River on Friday, May 31. Several dozen classmates have expressed an interest in this special night.
Friday Night Cocktails & Dinner, a Stevens tradition during Alumni Weekend, will continue with a buffet dinner in the Babbio Center Atrium. Graduates of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) members will be reuniting as they wine and dine while cruising the Hudson and taking in the Manhattan skyline. The Classes of 2003 and 2008 will be highlighted during this new G.O.L.D. Boat Cruise.
But new additions don’t mean out with the old, as the Beer Seminar and the Wine Seminar, both popular with alumni of all ages, will still be on the schedule. Stevens President Nariman Farvardin will give his “State of Stevens’’ Address beginning at 11 a.m., June 1. Dr. Farvardin’s “State of Stevens’’ was extremely popular last year, and all alumni are invited to hear about the Strategic Plan for Stevens. The Harold R. Fee ’20 Alumni Achievement Awards, given to the most recent reunion classes, will be given out at this event.
The Lollipop Run, for children ages 1-12, will be held Saturday, June 1, with registration beginning at 11 a.m. and the race kicking off at 1 p.m. All participants get a lollipop, T-shirt and medal.
Returning to a campus venue this year will be the Alumni Cocktails and Dinner Dance, a mainstay of the weekend. The night features cocktails, a three-course dinner and dancing to live music and will be held in the Howe Center. The Stevens Alumni Award, given to longtime Stevens supporter John J. Dalton ’60, will be presented at the dinner dance.
