The ILL Department can borrow books from other libraries if the book is not available at our library.
The service is free, and delivery can take up to 14 business days.
Please Note: Rush ordering is not available for this service and all books must be picked up at the circulation desk. We cannot send ILL books off campus.
The loan period for interlibrary loans varies according to the policy of the lending library. The due date will be printed on the form that the Stevens library attaches to the book when it is received.
There are 2 methods for ordering ILL books:
Method 1: Use the Online Book & Audio/Video Request Form.
Method 2: Use the Paper Form
Download and print the paper form, fill it out, and submit it to the circulation desk.
You will be notified through email when your book arrives, and you must sign for it at the circulation desk. ILL books will be at the circulation desk for one week after the email is sent, and if they are not claimed within that time, they will be returned to the lending library.
POLICIES – PLEASE READ BEFORE ORDERING
The S.C. Williams library is responsible for any books that our students, faculty and staff borrow from other libraries. Any lost, late or damaged books damage our credibility so please treat the books with respect.
We will not obtain the following:
1) Books that the S.C. Williams Library owns. If our copy of the book is out on loan we cannot get another copy but you may put a hold on a book through our catalog so that the current borrower cannot renew it.
2) Reference books (These materials never circulate)
3) Current textbooks available from the bookstore
4) Rare or archival material
LATE BOOKS: Books should be returned by the due date on the ILL book slip. Returning books late jeopardizes our relationship with other lending institutions. If you have a late book, the ILL Department will not put through any new book requests and you will not be able to pick up another ILL book until the late book is returned.
STUDENTS: If you do not return the book by the due date you will get 3 emails over a one-week period of time reminding you that your book is late. If the book is not returned by the date indicated in the 3rd email, your student account will be charged a $50 processing fee and a $150 lost book replacement fee. Also, you will be responsible for any late fees incurred from the lending library. If you return the book after the fees have been charged, your student account will be reimbursed the $150 replacement fee. Please be aware that you will not be reimbursed the $50 processing fee. If you are late with an ILL book more than 2 times without contacting us about it, you will lose your ILL privileges.
TEXTBOOKS: It is the library's policy not to order or borrow textbooks for students.
We do not carry them at our library because we do not have the space or funds to get a copy of each book for each class.
The ILL department are happy to get non-textbooks for students that the library does not own and the lending period is usually 28 days. Most classes last at least 3 months and students do not return the books on time because they still need them for longer than the 28 days allowed. When we do not send books back to the lending libraries by the due date our library is fined. Also, after seeing we do not return the books by the due date, the lending library may refuse to lend to us again.
Our library understands how expensive textbooks are so we have a reserve shelf for some textbooks. We encourage professors to lend us a copy of the textbook if they have a duplicate. We also ask students to donate their old textbooks or encourage their professors to lend us their duplicate copy.
STUDENTS: If you order a textbook and we request it for you by accident (not knowing it was a textbook at the time), we will send you an email to recall the book from you. If the book is not returned by the date indicated in email, your student account will be charged a $50 processing fee and a $150 lost book replacement fee.
BOOKS NOT PICKED UP: ILL books will be at the circulation desk for one week after the arrival notification has been sent, and if they are not claimed during that week, they will be sent back to the lending library.
STUDENTS: Students will be charged $5 for each book that is not picked up.
RECALLED BOOKS: If a book is recalled by another university, you will be asked to return it to us right away. Since the book is not the property of our library we must abide by the rules of the lending library.
BOOK LIMIT: Students are limited to 10 ILL books at one time. There is no limit for faculty.
MAILING: ILL books cannot be mailed to you.
RENEWALS: If you would like to renew an ILL book you must call 1 week prior to the due date on your ILL book. Any renewal requests later than one week prior to the due date will not be sent.
We will try to renew your ILL book twice; however, we cannot guarantee that your renewal request will go through as some schools do not allow renewals of ILL books.
To renew your book contact the ILL Department or Ann Sanzari.
