How Physics Went Wrong

Speaker: Sabine Hossenfelder of Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies

Graphic for the event,

Join us as Sabine Hossenfelder, an authority on quantum gravity at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies, talks about her acclaimed new book “Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray.

The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic, Hossenfelder argues, that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity. Observations have failed to confirm concepts, like string and multiverse theories, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria. Worse, these theories are actually untestable and they have left the field in a cul-de-sac. Only by embracing reality as it is can science discover the truth.

Before her talk, get to know Hossenfelder better by reading her blog Backreaction and watching her music video, "Outer Space," below. Also check out her Q&A with John Horgan, director of the Center for Science Writings at Stevens, in Scientific American.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, see the Center for Science Writings website, https://bit.ly/2QXMVqS, or contact CSW director John Horgan, [email protected]
